Is anybody having problems with right convenience. The right convenience key brings up the camera by default but some times I have to click a couple of times before it comes up. Is this normal or should I get a new phone.

Try changing that key to another app and see if it sticks.
Then back to the camera again and see if its any better.

Are you sure that you're depressing the button all of the way? Seems like a rudimentary question I know. But coming from 9000 with its metal keys, I have recognized that the 9700's rubberized keys take some getting used to.

That said I personally prefer them as it is much more difficult to inadvertently activate one of the convenience keys. With my 9000 I can't begin to count how many times my phone would practically scream "say a command" while I was in class. :-O

You are not alone- many other users mention the same thing. Probably a design feature so that if you REALLY want the camera to turn on you have to press the button firmly. I just leave the camera icon on the home page and click thru that way.

I'm guessing it's exactly that. The 9000's convenience keys were too easily activated IMO. Since getting used to it I have no problems with the 9700's and appreciate the tactile feedback. Now if you are pressing it firmly and still need to do so multiple times before the camera app opens then there is likely a defect.

same here, but a get used to it, and found that if i will press and hold it a little it activates camera, so we need i think just get used to it, as simple as 1-2-3 press and hold

I can actually feel the difference when I am pressing it firmly enough as there are two "clicks" of sorts. I'm assuming the first one is the rubber making contact with the physical button, and the second is the button actually depressing. A light press only results in one "click" and the button barely depresses. A firm press though and you get both clicks with the button going down pretty much flush with the side of the phone.

With the 9000 there is only one "click" and even the lightest of presses does it. Also the button itself is a lot shallower per se. Both the result of it not having the added layer of rubber, I'm assuming.

Goodness, all of that for a button - much easier to feel than explain

This is my third and I had to firmly press each one.

I hate this Quality Control issue and I'm not going to waste my time/gas exchanging it. I'm letting this go.

The RHS convenience button is two-step, just like a camera's because it's designed for that purpose. Can't remember where I read that from. I'm wondering if a firmware change could fix that, that is, have the convenience key launch the selected app on the "first stage press", as opposed to the current "second stage".

You're quite right. The first press focuses the camera (assuming you're already in the camera app) and the second press takes the pictures (or opens the camera app if it is currently closed).

I assume this could be fixed through a firmware upgrade since the first press is being registered as something; but will it? I doubt it since RIM configured the phone this way on purpose. Of course I could be proven wrong

Regardless though this is definitely not a matter of quality control unless you're depressing the right convenience key through both steps and the camera app is still not coming up every time. Keep in mind you can re-assign the camera to be activated by the left convenience key which is not 2-step button.

I can confirm that my 8900 similarly has a two stage right-side convenience button, and that with the Camera app running the first stage focuses the lens and the second stage takes the picture. I think we'll see this on all new devices with the focusing camera.

I agree, but I see it as poor design. The 2-step is useful in the camera app itself. Since the first press already registers in the OS (auto-focus), the OS can be programmed to launch whatever app for the RHS key on the first press. Do you really need a 2-step key press to launch an app?
