I upgraded my 7250 OS to 4.0.2.41 to take advantage of EVDO. The long time to recharge the battery made it necessary to return to 4.0.0.204. In doing so I lost my apps (temporarily) and some content (permanently). I think they're still on my PC, but can't figure out how to restore them. Here's what happened:

1. Ran Application Loader to install 4.0.0.204. In doing so it backed up all my apps and content (mail, bookmarks, contacts, etc.).

2. The 4.0.2.41 apps looked like they loaded successfully -- I saw a screen with them after the restore completed.

3. I was asked to logon to the handheld. After providing my password I was informed it had expired and I needed to create a new one, and did so.

4. The Application Loader could not reconnect to the handheld, with either the old or new password.

5. Hourglass on handheld for 30 or so minutes, followed by a 507 error.

I reloaded the 4.0.2.41 OS succesfully, but am missing my old email. I Am on a BES, but the thing that's troubling is there's no way (that we know of) to load my old email messages or other changes I made on the handheld that aren't replicated to the BES.

Is there a way to reload what was backed up during the OS installation?

Assuming you made the backup prior to the OS install, you can try the advanced restore function in desktop manager. Turn off wireless reconcile for whatever features you want to restore, such as Address Book, etc. Connect your handheld and run desktop manager. Go to "Backup and Restore", then "advanced." The loader will read your handheld. When it's done reading, go to the top left and choose "file." Open the backup file you want to restore from. Then you can individually choose the items you want to restore and do the restore for each one. Then when you're done unplug and turn on the wireless reconciles again. I've had to do this with my address book before when for some reason the BES dumped it from my handheld and the server...never did figure out why but was glad I did backups.

Thanks for the tips. I did not do a backup outside of the handheld software update process, since it indicated it would do that for me as part of the process. My guess is if I can find where that backup is stored I may be able to use the Desktop software to restore it... any ideas on where to find the data? It's not in c:\program files\common files\Research In Motion or any subdirectories.

Mine ended up in My Documents. Try starting a backup yourself and see where it asks you to save it. It should be called "Loaderbackup-(xx/xx/xxxx).ipd" where x=date. If you still can't find it just do a search for *.ipd and you'll probably find it if it's there.

In rereading your original post you probably want to restore the whole thing. Do the same thing...but instead of going to advanced just go to restore and restore the entire Loaderbackup-(xx/xx/xxxx).ipd file. That should put you back where you started but with new OS.

Exactly what I needed - thanks. For others who see this thread, messages received between the time the backup was created and the time I restored it were not delivered to the BB, and messages deleted on Exchange after the backup are still on the BB. But that's a minor inconvenience, and well worth it for having all my old emails back on the device. Thanks again!

Is there a way to put the messages back onto the handheld if you did NOT do a back up? My boss is less than Technically savy, so when his 7290 dies, he got another and wants his old emails back on there as well. Any suggestions?

During the upgrade process a backup may have been made, even without you knowing it. Search the PC where the backup was done for files ending with IPD. If you have those, you may be able to restore some content.
