Creating a new profile or changing the old one to high make no difference in my unit. Using MP3 Gain helps but then you end up with distortion on the ringer when going above 93 DB or so...must be a bug in the firmware.

Well it worked for a day or so but my "new" profile I made and my ringtones sounds low as the factory profile. What gives? It happened after I installed WebMessenger. Any help would be appreciated. BTW my made up profile with a custom ringtone was LOUD as FOCK but now it's pretty damn low in volume.

This conversation/thread has been covered a lot in the past and if you do a search on this topic you'll find some helpful hints and solutions tips.

I believe the answer was to actually edit the sound bite with an external program that you can download for free from downloads.com. You then edit the sound clip, saving the sound file with an increase in volume (utilizing the program to do this) - then, save it, then download the sound clip or ringtone to your 8830.

Having said that, I could get it to work, simply because I'm not that familiar with the actual program that you have to use. I could increase the sound a little bit to distortion, but then was not able to save it.

However, a lot of folks had great success with this tip/trick.

When you download the file though the BB from the web, you have no choice but to save it from within the player, either as a phone tone or a ringtone -- and it does nothing for volume. Sounds like a crock of sh_t to me.

Even editing an mp3 ringtone with Auducity so it is loud enough to clip before copying it over doesn't solve the problem. Interestingly, the built in Calypso ringtone is plenty loud (though it is the only one) so maybe plyphonic tones are not affected by this loudness bug. Does anyone know how to make your own polyphonic tones?

I was so disgusted with the sound issue, but I think I have fixed it for myself. I actually missed a server page on a locked server because of the low volume.

So I now use WAV files as my ringtones. Before using Media Manager to put them on my 8830, I used Sound Recorder (which is included in Windows XP, you might have to dig to find it) and increased the volume by about 200%. If the ringer is too "music-y" then there will be noticeable distortion, but if it more of a sound than a song, it worked great.

I use a Klaxon alarm for when a server goes down, and this thing would wake the dead now. No more missed pages for me!!

Appreciate the tip on the wav file and Sound Recorder to boost the volume. Worked wonderfully. This is on a Verizon 8830.

Sorry, I must be missing something. I can't figure out how to transfer files to and from the Blackberry. Where is this Media Manager?

Media Manager is included with Blackberry Desktop Manager. It is actually Roxio Media Manager but it is included as a utility and listed in the window that opens when you open desktop manager. You will have to be connected via USB to get Media Manager to work, just like you have to be connected to get Application Loader to work.
If media manager isn't listed as an available application, you may have an old version of desktop manager. My version is 4.2.2.12, which came with the 8830.

Some people are making this more complex than it needs to be. Verizon apparently does not care, I called the 800 as suggested earlier, they cared less than one would expect. Here is my fix:

Go to media manager in the BB desktop manager. Pick the mp3 ringtone, I use CTU ring, Highlight file- select from menu FILE-Edit with Quick Sound Editor - click on the equalizer looking button and move the levels up on all.then save as mp3 and sync to blackberry - MUCH LOUDER!!

Generaly everyone has conplained the ringer is a little low. There is no official fix except dowload the factory ring tones put them in to a sound editor like sound forge and increase the volume about 15 db should do it then fire the ring tone back to the bb

Some of those ringtones will also help you go deaf, and lose friends-- all at the same time.
