Default 8900 Shuts Down with Sitting on Flat Surface

Please Login to Remove!

I've having a strange issue with my new 8900 Curve. If I take the device and place it on my desk or any flat surface it will sometimes shut down the phone. I don't drop the phone down, just place it gently on the desk. It only happens occasionally.

I will sit the phone down and it's almost like the battery comes loose. The screen turns black and the LED turns solid red then shuts off. At that point I have to do a battery pull to get the device to reboot. All the time the battery is still tight in it's place.

Anyone else have this issue? Should I take it back and get a new one?

Sounds like the battery is moving away from contacts on the bottom. Try putting a business card between the battery and battery door

That's what I was thinking but when I check it's still just as secure. The battery in the 8900 is a good tight fit and it's not moving at all.

I just added a piece of cardstock behind the door, I will see if it does it again

You could try a battery pull if you haven't done that yet.

Otherwise, I would take it back and get a new one. Could be more problems down the line with it.

A battery pull would be pretty useless since he said he has to take out the battery to fix the problem. I would say its a device problem. See if it can be replaced

Default me too!!!

I just got my first blackberry, the 8900 and it did the same thing! I took it back, got a new one and it does it too! I thought it was just me being a new user. I talked with several experience blackberry uses and none of them had any suggestions. If anyone can help us, please, I love the phone and don't want to pick a new model!!

I put a piece of business card behind the battery as stated above and it hasn't done it since.

If returning the device to get a new one is an option, I suggest doing it, just like what the previous posters advised.

Default 2nd phone

I originally purchased the phone on Saturday, exchanged it for another one on Tuesday and the new one is doing the same thing. I have also tried removing my memory card wondering if it was fomatted incorrectly from my previous phone of a different kind, but that hasn't kept it from shutting off either. Thanks for everyones suggestions, but unfortunatley, I still have a phone that won't stay on. I hope I don't have to exchange it for a different style.

it turns off exactly when you place it on a desk? as opposed to you place it down, then go to pick it up 10 mins and its off?

could the atuo on/off settings be enabled?

Are you sure there's no magnet near where you're laying the phone down?
This seems very odd.

Seems real weird for two phones. But the magnet is a good thought. I laid my phone while in its case on top of my laptop keyboard and shut the laptop off.

I exchanged the second one for a third last night and it seems to be doing ok so far. The guy at the at&t store said it is a known issue but no fix yet and they don't know whats causing it. No magnets around anywhere, it could be laying on my desk, my nightstand, my leg, in my purse, it doesn't matter. It's happened when its charging and not charging. There were times that it would be several hours before shutting down and other times it would be minutes, no rhyme or reason to when it would happen. I agree very strange, I just have my fingers crossed this one works normally. Thanks for all your ideas and suggestions though!

I assume by your carrier you got it at an att store. I guess att now has the 8900. If it does it again you can have them get one from another store since a third bad one would indicate a bad shipment. Hope the one got continues to work. It is a graet phone.
