Default Question about reinstalling OS

Please Login to Remove!

I'm going to wipe my Storm with JL Commander and reinstall the OS. I'm all backed up and ready to rock, I just need to decide about which OS I'm going to install.

When I bought the phone, it had .75, and after a few months I installed a beta, I can't recall which one. Anyways, when VZW released .148, I wasn't able to wireless update. Not a real big deal, as I connect to my laptop and upgrade in that manner.

I thought I recalled reading that there was something I can do, such as deleting something on my computer (aside from vendor.xml) that would alleviate any foreseeable upgrade obstacles due to running a beta OS.

Anyone know of anything that I should do when installing a leaked OS, besides deleting the vendor.xml file?

Thanks...I've been through them I just recall reading a recent addition (over the summer) of something else that should be deleted, aside from vendor.xml, when installing a leaked OS. Please correct me if I'm wrong or if one of you experts think that notion is irrelevant.

Thanks...

To install the OS you only need to delete the vendor.xml file. I would recommend using Loader.exe over DM to load the OS onto your device.

I agree with using loader.exe. Has worked every time.

Having some JL_Cmder issues.

I ran JL_Cmder to wipe the device, first pulling out the battery. The device seemed hung for a while, then I realized I still had the battery in, unsure if that was an issue. So I unplugged the cable and pulled the battery, then ran JL_Cmder again. The device kept kept connecting and reconnecting, and I wasn't sure if it had worked, but I still hadn't seen a 507 screen. I plugged the battery back in and it rebooted, to a default screen with the default theme, but my 3rd party apps were in the Downloads folder (I get rid of this folder and make new folders for my apps). Some of the apps had a blue folder with an arrow though...

So I tried again, this time plugged into one of my laptop's rear USB ports. For the last five minutes, the red LED is on and there is no phone icon in the System Tray.

Thoughts?

Why are you wiping with JL_Cmder to begin with? You don't need to. Also, I've always wiped devices with the battery in. Disconnecting the device in the middle of a wipe like that can cause issues. Does your PC recognize the device at all?

If not, follow these steps:

It recognizes my phone when the battery is in, but not when it is out.

I actually tried those steps on that link, but when Apploader initialized, I didn't know where I would find the ALX file for the OS.

Thanks for responding...great to have people like you around when you're needed.

And I'm wiping with JL_Cmder because I wanted to reinstall the OS, as my phone's been f'ed ever since a Viigo update gone wrong, I uninstalled that and the partial archived version, and it still didn't shake the issues I've been having. And since I'm used to reformatting whenever I reinstall my PC OS, I did the same here...

Alright, start off by uninstalling any OS that you have for your device. Then download and install the OS you want to install on your Storm.

Once you've installed it, remove the vendor.xml file and then try to install the OS onto your device without messing with JL_Cmder. Do you have a backup of your data?

I've backed up my data and 3rd party apps. I've never installed an OS to my PC before today when I installed the 9530 .151 OS, so that's the only one there.

Will installing this get rid of my 3rd party apps?

Vendor.xml gone, loader.exe running...

No it will not get rid of your 3rd party applications. Just restore the apps and the data when you're finished installing the OS.

Looks like I'm cookin here...reloading data, then I'll check if any apps are missing. Thanks again for your direction.

So were you implying that you would have addressed my issue without using JL_Cmder? If so, then in what situation would you use JL_Cmder?

you use Jl_cmder when your phone displays a 507 error, where you have to wipe and reload the OS.

When upgrading the Os you don't need to wipe it.
This is done in the upgrade process if a check box is ticked allowing it to do so.

I thought your phone displayed the 507 screen after wiping using JL_Cmder, then you have a clean device onto which you can install the OS. Am I wrong?

No, you're not wrong. If the device shows a JVM 507 error, there's no need to use JL_Cmder. The only time to really use JL_Cmder is to remove an IT policy or to wipe the OS completely from the device if you would need to.
