Default Want to upgrade my BB, and need advice

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All, new to BlackBerryForums.

The reason I am here is to pose a question regarding upgrading my 8700c to a 9700.

My appologies up front if my question seems basic.

My company has provided me with a blackberry I have had it for about 2 years now. I want to purchase a 9700, so I can have 3G and have a camera.

Company runs BES is relatively large sized, we use AT&T, IT department will not provide new BB to me since mine still works.

Can I simply swap the SIM card and run Enterprise Activation and new blackberry work? or does something need to be done on the BES side?

Basically I do not want to involve IT department.

Any help is appreciated.

The only thing the BES Admin might need to do is provide you an activation password...

Of course, you really should get approval from them for a new device on their network.

IMHO, it isn't a good idea to use your personal device on BES. If the company is paying the freight and providing the device, they generally have a good reason for doing so.

And as JSanders said, check with the company first as some will not allow a personal device to be used.

Plus the IT Policy can really lock down the device and restrict what you can and cannot do with it. And the camera adds another problem with security. Many firms don't allow it and the IT Policy blocks it.

If you lan to put your personal data such as contacts, calendar, email and use BBM, etc. That can also be an issue. You might want to check this link:

What does BES see; what can be tracked/logged? - Port3101.org : Your BES Connection

IMHO, use the device the company gives you and if you feel the need, get the 9700 for your personal use.

Like Dubdub said, many IT Policies often lock down the features you're so keen on. And the IT Policy is in force 24/7, not just during business hours. You're camera won't just be disabled while on the job, but always and for as long as you're on the BES. You also probably wont be able to get personal email on it, even though it's your own device. When you're on a BES, you play by all their rules. That's where the resistance of so many users to putting a personal BB on the corporate BES comes from.

Wirelessly posted

Ditto to the above. Get a personal device and keep it your personal device. Maybe carrying two blackberrys sometimes might be a pain, but you'll be happier overall having full control over your personal device and doing what you want with it. Take it for what it's worth.

Hmm... well seems like I should keep the two separate to avoid any lock downs on my personal BB.

Thanks all for the help.
