Default Holding GSM/EDGE on 9500/9530

Please Login to Remove!

I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of the rumored 9520 Storm w/wifi however this does not look like it will become a reality anytime soon if at all.

I have read a few comments from folks using an unlocked Storm (9500/9530) on a GSM provider and have issues holding an EDGE signal.

I may get one to use on T-Mobile but am curious if this is just a case of the service books and config not done properly or is this a real issue that I will have to deal with such as constants reboots etc. to hold a steady EDGE? Or have these issues been resolved with current firmware releases?

Thanks in advance.

As of .141 it has not been resolved. You will likely have to swap out the radio file in whatever os you choose to run to .90

I've got an unlocked 9530 on Rogers. I have to run the .90 radio file or I don't have data.

i wonder what has changed in the radio code after .76, because .76 was an OS version that I noticed held the signal solid and strong....

I think the only reason people use the .90 is it seems to work well with the hybrid os'. The original .76 doesn't seem to work with any of the hybrids. To be honest though, the accelerometer sucks with .90 but its the only way to keep it working.

yeah i once tried hybridizing, using .76 radio with a recent OS (i think .114) and the phone spat out a error @ the white bootup screen, so i figured it would not work....

from my experiences, i did not like the .90 radio...

Thanks for all the feedback on this.

Not sure I want to mess around with trying to get this to work consistently.

Is it safe to assume that is stictly a behavior of the OS and that a future OS release could magically resolve all of these EDGE stability issues?

I have an unlocked 9500, and I have no problems with holding a GSM/EDGE radio. I set the handset to look only for 2G networks because when I am in my home, I cannot get steady 3G and when I go out, I'm too lazy to switch to 3G. I didn't have any problems with reception at all... so far.
