I have searched everywhere and read every thread that seemed relevant and this question was not asked nor answered anywhere so forgive me if this is a duplicate and the answer is buried somewhere on the forum.

I just upgraded to the 8120 from the 8100, which was a great move. I am on TMO with H@H plan for UMA connection. I read that you can tether for high speed connections and have done so in a Hotspot location with great success for the most part. The only problem I have is the speed is limited to the Standard Modem setting in Windows. I have increased it to the highest speed of 921600 bps up from the original 115200 bps and noticed an increase in speed.

Now for the question!!! Is there any way to set this speed to the full 54Mbps of 802.11g or something in the 10+Mbps rates of 802.11b to get even better bandwidth. If anyone knows of some additional commands or settings or apps that will include higher bandwidth rates for the Standard Modem I would be happy to write up a tuturial.

Windows XP SP2
Blackberry 8120 4.5.0.42
DM 4.3

Didn't need that...I am looking for some help not a snide remark...I have wireless built into my laptop but don't want to pay Hotspot cost when I already have it through my mobile phone costs.

I was not trying to be snide at all. I just edited this post three times! The limitation you are experiencing is due to the way the connection is set up I would guess and only a T-Mobile total internet would fix that... you may also want to look at something like fonero... FON I use that for Hot spots and in my opinion it was a worthwhile investment, buy the router, share my internet at home where no one pays for hot spots and have access to a world of hot spots

I do this as well.... I wouldn't worry about increasing the modem speed any further. At 921kb/s = 115KB/s you are are pushing the limit of what the T-Mo HotSpot will allow per user. There is no way their internet connection is 54Mb/s or even 11Mb/s. Even if it was, they aren't going to allow that much throughoutput per individual user. Add the overhead of IPsec on the UMA connection and I bet you are already maxing out.

At the hotspots I've tried at Starbucks, the speeds show the total available bandwidth at each site is a single T1.
