IMS is IP Multimedia Subsystem guys. It is a framework or architecture that enables a faster deployment or development of feature rich services. IMS is a service layer technology and UMA is a Access layer.
So UMA will allow the mobile subscriber to move between different access types of networks. Think VOIP. Moving from the cell tower to the internet router in your house.
But UMA can't do it all alone, so it taps IMS on the shoulder and says " I am not going to jail for you or anybody!!!!" No wait, uhhh sorry.
IMS helps those Sprint Nextel phones to push to talk for example, up coming video conferencing on your phone and all that other cool media stuff.
UMA takes you from the ballgame to the mall and IMS is the stores in the mall offering all the different kind of merchandise (services.)
