Default BES 10 and BES 4.1.7

Please Login to Remove!

In an attempt to get a definitive answer before the floodgates open, we have an existing BES 4.1.7 for Domino working just fine for 70 users.

The first Z10 is on the horizon.

Can I install the BES 10 software on the same system for the newer devices? I know I will need to trade up my licenses but that's for someone else to deal with.

I have read that the co-existence isn't due out until May 2013 and even then it talks about BES 5.0.4, a move we never made

Hi, BES 5.0.4 will not support your z10 device, you will have to install a BDS server in order to manage it.

You may keep your BES 4.1.7 for the old devices, but i recommend you the upgrade to 5.0.4, just if your enviroment meet the requirements.

Best Regards

Thanks for the replies folks.

I had suspected we would need to upgrade to 5.0.4 and then put 10 on alongside it. I assume that is possible on a single server?

We don't use a lot of policies but do use Enterprise Messenger so the move to Express isn't really an option.

There will be a version in the near(? mid of year ?) future which will allow to run BDS and BES on one server. But, currently, this is not an option.

hello, I can't edit my post, so... you don't absolutly need to upgrade to 5.04. You can keep your 4.1.7 and install on an other machine BDS10. Even if you upgrade you need 2 seperate installation. They will be completely independant. You must see BDS10 as a brand new server. If you want to use the BlackBerry Management Studio, you need to upgrade to 5.04.

Thanks for the clarification.

Do you know if BDS10 will co-exist with my 4.1.7, when the "shared" system finally becomes available?

I know my signature says, but please bear in mind this is for Lotus Domino.

Well, as far as I know there's NO support for Domino in BES10. Zero. Nada.

I guess BES10 should not be seen as a mobile sync solution, but as a mobile fleet management solution instead.
That's quite not the same BES as we've known to this day.
As I understand it, PIM sync is done by the device itself through ActiveSync, and BES10 will only be used to enforce corporate policies (and add supplementary services I guess).
(I don't even know if it can prevent devices from being registered to the real sync server directly).

IBM has an ActiveSync server solution, Lotus Traveler, and it's available free of charge.
I guess you should have a look in that direction.
Lotus Traveler is much less full-featured than traditional BES, but still has basic terminal management (lock/erase device remotely).
User activates a new device with his iNotes credentials.
Once installed, it's basically a zero-admin solution (unless you choose to require admin validation for new devices).

Our setup is similar to yours, Notes/Domino users with BlackBerry devices and BES 4.1.7 (never moved to BES5/BESX because that's such an ugly beast).
And we've been "testing" Lotus Traveler for 1.5 year.
With solid support for Android (native client or ActiveSync) and iOS (ActiveSync), future support for Windows Phone (currently in beta), and presumably working support for BlackBerry 10, it seems Lotus Traveler will pretty much be our BES successor.

Hi Knotty, like more what?
More features than in Lotus Traveler, or more stuff coming on?
Is native support for Domino on the plan?

Hi KnottyRope

Thanks for that.

I was fully aware that 4.1.7 had gone EOL, but as it does all we need and there's no money for anything new at present the urge to upgrade has been resisted.
