Hello,

I am trying to install BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express 5.0.1 (Bundle 5) on a Windows 2008R2 x64 server. The Exchange server is version 2007 SP2 with Rollup 1 for SP2 installed as well. Exchange server runs Windows 2003R2 x64.

Starting the setup program for BES Express, I get the License agreement and I say "Create a BlackBerry Configuration Database" on the next screen.

On the next screen, the option for "BlackBerry Enterprise Server" is greyed out. I can only choose "Remote component".

Any ideas what might cause that?

I created a "besadmin" user with local admin rights - that user is not part of the domain admins group as pointed out in the Install and Configuration Guide.

I have installed ExchangeMapiCdo.EXE Version 6.5.8153.0 as of January 12, 2010.

The thing is, I don't even get to the point where I can select any of the Exchange-related stuff so this leads me to believe that there is something very basic missing.

Any help is appreciated!

I just double-checked and the server that I am trying to install this on is a Windows 2008 SP2 x64 machine - not 2008R2.

Do you have an instance of SQL installed?

Yes, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 runs on the same server. Its the Developer Edition of SQL but I don't know if that would make a difference.

SQL 2008 is not on the supported list IIRC.
That could be the issue.
I saw that SQL express 2005 is supported.

Hmm, I do have SQL server 2005 installed on another machine in the network but I don't even get the chance of pointing the BES Express install towards that SQL instance.

I have watched the videos that explain the BES Express setup on RIM's web site and those options come later in the installation process.

Where I am stuck is, I think, the third step in the installation process. This is right after the License Agreement and the "Yes, I want to create a new database" option.

BTW, I have tried all three options on that database selection (create new, use existing, install a standalone router) but neither one of those allows me to choose the installation of the actual Blackberry Enterprise Server on the next screen.

Does the setup wizard think it's already installed? Did you try to undo an install previously (aside from this current problem)?

Not on this server, no.

This "greyed out" screen is what I got the first time I ran the BES Express setup on this particular server.

The funny thing is that I also tried to install BES Express on a Windows 2003R2 SP2 x86 server with SQL 2005 installed and I got the same "greyed out" screen.

Later on I read that the besadmin user cannot be a Domain Admin and that 2003 server is a Domain Controller - therefore the besadmin user had to be a Domain Admin in order to be able to remote into it. So I abandoned the plan to install BES Express on that particular server.

Needless to say I was surprised to get the same result on the 2008 server.

I just ran the BES Express setup on the Exchange Server itself. It doesn't seem to have any problems on there, giving me the option to install it as the install guide says.

I didn't go through with the install because my users probably wouldn't appreciate their email server being down during the day... I'm going to do it later tonight.

So my guess is that its got something to do with some software that is installed on my Windows 2008 server as well as on my 2003 domain controller. What that is, I don't know at this point.

That happened to me the first time I tried to install BES Express 5. After a bit of googling around I found it was because I was trying to install it on a Terminal Server- have you got the TS / RDS role installed?

Yes, I have Terminal Services configured on both of the servers I tried it.

Good, at least now I know what it is and I must have used the wrong keywords in Google when I was looking for a solution before posting a message here.

No worries, glad to have helped! Maybe chuck virtual PC / VMWare on one of them and run BES in a virtual machine.
