I'm hoping the vast knowledge of this forum would be able to help me.

I have a BlackBerry Curve 8900 and at home I have an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station router.

If someone would be so kind to take a little time and answer the following questions, it would be most appreciated.

1. What is UMA? To my understanding, it is the ability to use a UMA Wi-Fi connection for both voice and data transfer instead of the mobile network. Is this correct?

2. My phone says it is using a UMA connection (see picture below) but how do I know that it is using the UMA for data, or more importantly voice? Is there a way to confirm it or see the data moving?




3. UMA sounds a lot like Rogers TalkSpot. Do I have to have a TalkSpot plan in order to use the UMA feature on my phone? or (using the information in question 2) am I already using it, and a TalkSpot plan is unnecessary?

UMA is the ability to use both data and voice at the same time, like 3G... you can connect to your router and use your phone kinda like VoIP... but its nots... essentially when you make a call on UMA, it goes from your phone, to the router, to your internet provider, to your cell provider, then to the other persons cell/home line provider then to there phone... so your carrier is involved...

NOW with UMA you do NOT need to have an option to use it... like rogers talkspot... the talkpost option just allows you to NOT use your regular minutes... but if you do not have talkspot then you use your regular minutes... for example... my plan i have 350 daytime minutes, now if i can using UMA the time i spend on the phone is deducted from the 350... but if i had the $15 talkspot option it would be unlimited in my local calling area... but even with the talkspot option and i wasnt connected to UMA i sould use my 350 minutes... make sense?

to make sure you are just using UMA and wifi, you can go into your options> manage network> and there will be an option in there for wifi... you can change it to wifi preferred or wifi only, or one other... the best one to have it set to is wifi preferred... as that way if the connection drops you will automatically connect back to the cell networks...

So I understand that voice will still get charged unless you subscribe to TalkSpot, but what about data? Will I be chewing up my 500MB while connected to UMA/wifi and not subscribed to TalkSpot?

No you won't be pulling from your 500MB pool of data if you're connected via Wi-Fi (well... for the most part -- certain apps won't work properly over wi-fi, or they may revert to the EDGE connection so check your connection preferences if you're concerned about using EDGE data).

TalkSpot only has to do with how voice minutes get billed.
