Was doing some reading about device security and what happens if you lose your BB....if your device is either on a bes or bis, is the provider able to 'nuke' it if it gets lost ?

In other words, send out a signal that will either make the BB self-destruct (internal short circuit or something) or just lock it out so that it cannot be accessed by anyone ?

BES systems can lock a device remotely, or just make it unusuable.

BIS cannot do so remotely. Your carrier "could' lock the PIN, if you report it as stolen or lost, so that the PIN cannot be reused again by the "finder'.

on BIS and if password protected after 10 wrong passwords it erases all data in the device for peace of mind.

This is true. It just does not disable the device from continuing to be used by the 'finder'.

on BIS, enable device Security Options coupled with Owner contact info, plus in our case, a tollfree number is listed with offer of Reward upon return of device . . . the prospects of a Reward has resulted in return of lost devices.

How can a BES administrator do this?

If this is possible - I would suggest:

PIN the "Finder" and offer a carrot and stick.

Carrot - a reward

Stick - an unusable BB

Exactly what I do...reward notice and phone number is included in our owner info that's displayed on-screen.

My phone has my wife's mobile number, her phone mine, so we just can't lose them both at the same time.

the only time that blacklisting helps is on CDMA devices that are locked to a specific carrier. ATT and Tmobile do not care if a device is reported stolen. You do not need to register an IMEI to activate the device on GSM, just pop a SIM into it. Also, blacklisting will have very little meaning soon with sprint unlocking their devices and verizon joining the open handset alliance.

I seem to recall reading that Unite! could send a kill signal to devices. Although I understand it is available on Telefonica details still seem a little thin on the ground.

its a BES like feature. im sure it will either lock the device or just wipe it completely like the BES remote kill.

getmybbback - your BES admin would simply send a wipe command to the BlackBerry.

I do keep a reward notice on my owner page as described above.

BES Admin - did an erase and disable. My understanding is that this will only prevents the thief from using our company BES.

I called Rogers, my service provider, and got someone who knew about BBs. He was able to put a block on my old BB PIN so that at least the thief will not be able to use Roger's BIS. I assume he or someone else could use another companies BES.

I have also been tracking Craigslist - "want to buy an 8320" - and emailing them to warn them that if they are looking at buying an 8320 with my old PIN - it is stolen.

I am also contacting sellers using a rudimentary advertisement with little info - i.e. someone who sounds like they are looking to make a quick sale. If after contacting they sound suspicious I will go check out the BB.

it seems to me you are going through a great deal of trouble about this blackberry. if its gone its gone and the likelyhood that you will be able to retrieve it, or reactive even if you do, is very small.
