I'm still in research of the soution to fix my wifi issue.
Indeed i can only access BIS through an Orange router.
What could be the result if i'd update my device with a T-mobile OS for example? Should i still be able to connect to BIS through my carrier here in France?

You can upgrade your OS without any hinderance to your Orange connection. See the Sticky Note in the 8800 section of this forum and follow the directions exactly as posted.

All you will need to do is remove the vendor.xml file

Just make sure you upgrade to an OS for your specific phone. an 8820 OS won't work on an 8800 or 8830. An 8310 OS won"t work on an 8300 or 8310.

Plus I doubt if you would gain much n the process. Upgrading just to upgrade doesn't make much sense to me. Now if there is some functionality that you know exists in a newer version and you need that, then by all means go for it.

Changing the vendor file does nothing but change the opening screen and in some cases do more harm than good. As other features may be tied tothat file other than the ATT or T-Mo or B2 splash,

That is incorrect information. Nothing will change the opening vendor splash screen.

I have loaded many OSs to BBs, and I have never seem one harmed or crippled by removing the vendor.xml file.

So, ... If I have a TMobile branded phone, but I'm using it on AT&T, do I gain anything by using an AT&T OS?

The carrier specific apps (MyFavs or MediaNet for instance) are not added or removed by using another carriers OS are they?

All of the operating system code is written by RIM. It is tested and released by the carriers. Carrier specific apps are pushed down by the carrier (MyFavs) and are not impacted or impaired by the version of the OS installed.

What you gain is any improvements or bug fixes that are included in the code. Unfortunately, the carriers choose not to issue release notes.

sanders. as my experience, u may install another carrier OS and go with it.

but if something happen and u need/must escalate problem to RIM, they will blame the OS first.

for example, 2 month ago, im escalate problem one of my client to RIM, i go to RIM helpdesk on the phone about 3 hours! just to find that they blame my client who using 8300 AT&T and upgrade it using Vodafone OS version... they want him install the correct firmware first before call them again....

that's my experience

JSanders meant you can install OS's on LIKE carrier devices. Like T-Mo OS on an AT&T device. However, you cannot install a Sprint OS on a T-Mo device.

I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question. Anyway, here goes.

My mate attended a BlackBerry lunch in Toronto at the Royal York Hotel on Nov. 20th. Among other things that were given out as gifts was a BB 8830. (TELUS was one of the sponsors.)

I am currently using a BB 7130e, and my carrier is BELL MOBILITY. So, if I want to be able to use the BB 8830, do I have to change carriers?

You would have to contact BELL Mobility to see if they will allow the Telus device on their system. Sprint and Verizon in the US are beginning to do this. Not sure about carriers in Canada.

Thanks John. I was afraid that I would get a response like this, as BELL MOBILITY has said that they would not accept any new devices "PERIOD" on their system. However, maybe with the change in regulations that are slated to take place in Canada in the not too distant future, BELL might have a change of heart.

Otherwise, I will end up having a very nice paperweight. (Sigh)
