Default Backup & Restore Using Desktop Manager 6

Please Login to Remove!

I had a problem with my Storm 2 and Verizon replaced it. I had a complete backup of my old Storm 2 that I created using DM 6. When I got the new Storm 2 I did a restore.

The restore did not restore many things. Any application that I had downloaded from App World or any Ap that I downloaded from another internet site were not restored. I believe there were other setting like ring tones etc that also were not set properly.

I thought that DM was suppose to do a complete backup. Am I doing something wrong or were my expectation wrong. If my expectations were wrong please advise best method of doing a 100% backup (and if it is a free app that is even better).

The DM only backs up data--not apps. If you want to transfer apps, etc. you need to use the Switch Device Wizard.

I see the Switch Device Wizard but the way I see it is that I can use it to transfereverything from one device to amother device and I must have both devices available at the same time. While this is a very useful function it has a limited use from my view point.

I would like to backup my entire BB device so that I can restore some or all in case I have a problem with the BB information. Can you recommend a good backup\restore app?

Yes, you need both devices for Switch Device Wizard.

If you want to backup your 3rd party apps you'll need to follow the instructions below. It hasn't been rewritten for DM 6 but it works pretty much the same way in DM6 as it did in DM5 and DM4.

Thanks for the procedure it just saved me many hours of work. It worked fine with a couple of minor exceptions. All of the applications were installed but the locations of the files needed to be changed (very minor issue) but more importantly even though it restored the applications it did not restore the application setting. The most important of which (in my case) is I have Opera Mini installed and it did not restore my bookmarks so I lost them all.

Another minor discrepancy is that the temporary file created (and I copied) did not get erased automatically after I pressed cancel. Maybe that is becasue of the new version of DM or maybe because I am using Windows 7.

As I posted to your other reply, 3rd party app data is never backed up and restored. There is no way to do that.

Again, thanks a lot. I was not trying to belittle you very helpful instruction I was just trying to indicate that it was not perfect and maybe if enough people bring it up either BB or a third party will create an app to do the complete job.

I also need to correct the statement abount the temp files I have recently gone back to the location and they are gone.

I noticed that when I went back into "my World" of the BB App World after doing the reinstall per you instructions above there were no apps showing as installed. Not having the apps shown is not a concern but will I still get notice that an app I actually did install by the restore method has an update available?
