Default Google Maps Cell Site Location Always = SF

Please Login to Remove!

I have a weird problem with my BB 9700 running 5.0.0.423. Whenever I don't have GPS reception, google maps shows my location as Market Street in San Francisco. Poynt shows the location correctly so it seems to be a google maps problem. Does anyone else experience this? Any fixes? Would an OS upgrade fix it? Thanks.

You need to refresh your GPS.

Options > Advanced > GPS > Menu key > Refresh GPS.

Make sure you are outside with a CLEAR view of the sky, and give several minutes to obtain the satellites.

It isn't a problem when I get a GPS signal; only when I don't so google maps is figuring the location from the cell site location.

Yes, I did. As long as it gets a GPS signal, the location is correct. But, when no GPS is available, it defaults to SF when it should give my approximate location based on cell towers.

Though you won't want to run this way permanently, try forcing your device to 2G (assuming you've got 3G normally) and see if that corrects your location data. There are reports I've read of incorrect locations in Google Maps for certain locations and certain 3G towers.

Thanks. I had tried that but it didn't change. I have to believe it is some interaction between the OS and google maps. I have the same problem in Connecticut where I live and Orlando where I am now. It works fine on my iPhone and also works on my BB Tour through Verizon. I may try a new OS. Thanks.

I have the same issue both with my old 8320 and now with my 9700 when on UMA, so it isn't device specific. I think it has something to do with my UMA and maybe the original setting for my 911 address. Whenever I'm on UMA, and not getting a gps signal, Google Maps shows my location at my old apartment where I used to live and first got UMA. I've moved about 10 miles away, but it still shows there. Same with my wife's 8320 which doesn't have GPS. When I get away from my WIFI to 3G or EDGE, it seems to work fine. I've checked my 911 address with T-Mobile and it correctly shows my new address. I've reset Google Maps. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

I've seen similar issues while on WiFi, like using WiFi at a hotel, etc., with maps showing you in some distant city. Likewise on the 3G, I've heard people say the GPS location might be off a bit.

have you always had this problem or does it come and go? have you tried removing maps and re-installing it? its really strange that you experienced the same problem in 2 different locations

At least it shows you're in the US. My Google Maps shows that I'm in India (never been there). Once it gets a satellite signal it corrects itself.
