GPS still crippled w/ verizon?
Please Login to Remove!
I was wondering if they're still trying to charge $10/month for something built into the phone capabilities.
Thanks,

As far as I know, yes. Any Verizon users out there that can confirm that?

Welcome to the forums.
With OS 4.5, you can use GPS with BlackBerry Maps on Verizon. Other than that, you will need to purchase VZNavigator.

Google Maps picks up my location with no problem on my Storm. Now I may not be getting location access through cell tower triangulation, just GPS, I haven't checked. But it generally works pretty well. And I haven't paid them for the service.

You are able to use third party GPS programs on the Storm, such as Google Maps, Blackberry Maps, Where, etc. Although the GPS seems to be ultra accurate on Google Maps, it does not offer turn by turn directions, real time traffic and weather like VZ Nav does, which a gps program that doesn't offer turn by turn spoken directions seems pretty useless to me.

I tried to get this working on my Girlfriends Pearl from Verizon. So you can turn on the GPS feature and use it in Google Maps/ Latitude? If so is there any special instructions?

AFAIK Google Maps will only use cell tower triangulation, not true GPS.

Older versions fo Google Maps will do it with a GPS puck. AmazeGPS will give you the turn-by-turn directions, and it's free as well. AmazeGPS does not have real-time traffic but how accurate is that anyways and is it worth $10/month to "Big Red"?

Mine is very accurate.
I just continue to get a kick out of people more or less complaining about a company simply charging for a service it offers.

What we object to is that you canNOT use the gps with other 3rd party programs that do things that Verizon Navigator does not do like geocaching, logging my bike ride's miles and elevation, like using the gps when NO data is available when I'm out hiking. I'd even be willing to pay Verizon $10/month to just turn on the darn gps and allow me to use it as I want but not restrict me to just their Navigator program.

I'm a biker and a hiker too, plenty of accessories for both sports to do that.

Maybe you were just speaking about Verizon? I can't say about that. However, Google Maps will use GPS on GPS enabled phones with most carriers. It works great with T-Mobile. On non-GPS phones, it will use tower triangulation.

Yes, I was referring to Verizon as it is what this thread pertains to.

GPS is fully functional for the Storm isn't it, just not the older BlackBerries.
Right? We will see if that trent continues with new BlackBerry models from Verizon Wireless.

On my Storm on VZW, I definitely get GPS accurate to a few meters on Google Maps. It places me in the correct room in my house, and when I travel, it accurately places me on the appropriate road. Trapster also accurately places (and warns) me.
Whether it's "pure" gps, or tower assisted, or anything else, I can't say; I haven't plumbed those depths. It just works. And beyond those two apps, I can't speak with any authority.

The GPS is fully unlocked on the Storm. It will work with third party apps.
The GPS is partially unlocked on the Verizon Curve. As noted above, it will work with BBMaps and VzNav. It will not work with Google Maps on the Verizon Curve.

I am using google maps on my 8130 Pearl; google maps does not do a great job of pin-pointing my location when I am at home (it comes within a few hundred yards), but we have terrible cell reception at my home.
I was wondering if google maps was using GPS or cell towers for triangulation (I would guess cell towers).

Cell tower triangulation for your 8130.
