Default Wi-Fi - White Dash?

Please Login to Remove!

I am connected to my wireless network at home, but next to it, I see the white dash. Does that mean that I'm using AT&T's internet right now? I don't have the data service plan, and I do NOT want to be charged. There is a green check mark next to Mobile Network, and I'm guessing that always needs to be on?

How do I know when I'm using my Wi-Fi and not AT&T's internet?

These are some of my current settings:
Data Services: On
Browser: Hotspot Browser

You have to have a green checkmark instead of the dash. Also your wifi icon should be lit up.

Yes, it does! I entered it earlier when I was connecting.

Ok, so where the network is does it show "ATT - (network name)" on the homescreen?

I noticed that after my 8900 connects to my network, it takes a few minutes until I get the green checkmark. Until you get that green checkmark and the WiFi icons lights up you are still using the mobile network.

Do you have a BlackBerry data plan? I'm with AT&T, and in the store I was told that I don't need it, but online tech support told me that it is indeed required to use Wi-Fi. That makes no sense to me. I think that's why I'm having all of this trouble.

I love the BlackBerry, but it's been frustrating so far. I know that most places I'll be I'll have free Wi-Fi access, and I don't want to spend $30 a month. Sounds like I'm going to have to let it go.

Is the plan required for T-mobile BlackBerry users who want to use Wi-Fi?

Have you done the basics? Pulled the battery on your BB while it's powered on, wait at least 30 seconds, then replace? And rebooted the router? It took 2 times of resetting my router before I had wifi access on my BB at home.

You should also check at other wifi spots. That might help to tell you if it's your router, if you can connect in other places.

Also, do search of these forums. There has been a lot of discussion about wifi problems.

The BB Data isn't required to use WiFi...BUT you won't be able to get your emails on your device through the native email client, blackberry messenger, and many of the third party applications...those all require the BB Data to be on your account

I went back to the store and was able to connect to a random unsecured network, and it still gave me white dash!

I have not done either of those things, but I'll definitely give them a try! Thanks!

Oh, I see. Would it let me youtube using just WiFi without the data plan?

For those of you with AT&T who use Wi-Fi, what are your settings? I just tried the above suggestions, and they didn't help me.

I've done that, but I know why it's not working now. I've contacted AT&T a few times, and they have told me that I do need the data plan to use the Wi-Fi. The guy in the store said it's not needed though. This has been so frustrating!
