Someone stole my BB Bold (9000) so I opted to try out the new Javelin (8900) for AT&T... little did I know that the 8900 isnt 3G compatible... which annoyed me bc its a newer AT&T device than the bold is, but they went backwards, i HATE when companies do that to make some more money (prediction: 8900 turns on 3G next year to make another couple of bucks).

Anyways, should I be bummed that theres no 3G on this new phone? I can go back and get the bold through insurance if thats the better bet... I do like the size of this curve but I use my internet and data and all that stuff quite a bit. I live in Manhattan but i'm not sure if that makes any difference with EDGE/Wi-Fi/3G, etc. Any help?

Depends on how you use the device. I doubt that you would notice any difference in email send and receive. Email can't send/receive in EDGE while you are on a call however.

You might notice a slight difference in browsing speed, but only slight. You would see a faster connection if you tether.

Battery life should be better in EDGE as you aren't constantly searching for a 3G signal.

Might be a couple other concerns that I didn't think about.

Also, IMO, a big plus with the 8900, it has a lot more memory in which you can load programs. The 9000 has more total memory, but most of that is only for storage of music, pics, etc.

I have a lot of apps on my 8900! I store all my books, bibles, music, pics, etc on a 16g micro sd card.

So, it basically depends on how you will use the phone. I personally would rather have more apps than I would 3G.

I picked the 8900 over the 9000 initially. More attractive form factor, better camera, more app memory, etc., etc...

I can't tell the difference in speed. Had the Bold and now have the 8900. Like the 8900 much better. Size, feel, weight..

3G =

- somewhat faster download
- higher SAR rating (you get more chance of dying)
- Thicker phone
- Shorter battery life
- Dropped Calls.

Blackberry is awesome for emails, and EDGE is good enough for downloading emails. Leave the web browsing to iPhone.

o yeah didn't read you live in the city.. you need 3G for the city. EDGE never loads. I had the first iPhone and it takes foooooorrrever to load google map and websites near almost everywhere in the city. Get your bold back.

Yes you should be major bummed. I have one, but only keep it because a slow smart phone is a perfect match for my going nowhere fast life.

I always remember what one of the members on this forum mentioned a few times: the 8900 on EDGE can be faster than a BB on 3G because it has more "data pipelines." I recently changed from a Bold to an 8900 because the Bold would not stop dropping calls while in 3G. While there were ways to force it down to EDGE (which I did), I didn't feel I should keep a phone that was so much larger and heavier if I was going to keep it in EDGE anyways. Now I have no dropped calls.
