After several years of Blackberry use and numerous upgrades on several different devices I am stuck.

My wife got a new AT&T 9700 this week. Before doing anything else I wanted to upgrade to the latest OS. I downloaded 5.0.0.979, deleted the vendor file, and attempted to install the upgrade. I had recently upgraded DM to the latest version and had used it with an upgrade to my Torch OS. That worked fine so I thought this would be OK also. DM recognized the 9700 and then told me an OS upgrade was available. When I started the install, I got an error message telling me that this OS is not compatible with the device.
I then thought I would install it using BBSAK. The latest version of BBSAK will not recognize that the 9700 is even connected! With that I just gave up, activated the handheld and my wife started using it with the original OS.

Has AT&T done something other that use the vendor.xml file to prevent any unofficial upgrades of the OS? If not, any suggestions?

Did you uninstall the 9800 OS? I don't know if this would cause a problem but everytime I install a OS I make sure I have no other ones on the computer. Hope everything works out.

That is a good idea. It may be that DM is somehow stuck on the 9800 OS even though it said it was installing the 9700 OS. Thanks!

Do NOT use the DM to upload the update (read the instructions here Installing OS Update, point #3); instead initiate the OS install via loader.exe (in the same folder as vendor.xml file).

That way there is no confusion...
