I have noticed that like was mentioned in the previous post UMA is still in its "infancy" stage for the 9700. I believe that the reason that UMA is not an 'always on' connection when the Wi-Fi is always available is that the bandwidth availability for the router itself isn't sufficient to hold Wi-Fi

I have tested on 4 different routers.
- Rogers Hi-Speed Internet (Home Router)
- Rogers Portable Internet (Home Router)
- Bell Sympatico Business DSL (Small Business Router)
- Unknown Provider (Hotel Router)

My tests showed that both of the Home Routers have unstable UMA coverage suspecting it was due to the bandwidth issue while the other two routers I had an 'always on' connection to UMA.

I remember talking to a friend about this, I think Rogers has to upgrade some of their infrastructure in order to get UMA really working properly with 3G phones. This information was from last year when the 9700 was first launched, he was able to try UMA with some custom ALX file and didn't recommend it because it just kept dropping calls.

I had the same problem connecting to the UMA. What is surprising is, I was able to connect to UMA through the WIFI router and then one fine day I replaced the router with the same exact model and configuration (that is what I thought).

Summary of the solution
For the UMA to work, the main requirement is that the WIFI router is configured for a single type (G or B) and most preferably on "B". Do Not at any circumstances use the MIXED.

What a relief. I wish the T-mobile CS knew this or it could be in the min requirements of the UMA access instructions on theirs or BB website

so after many hours on the phone w. rogers they have activated 3G/UMA but u need to pay for it... if u squak enough u can have the $5 feature added on for free they added it to 3 different lines for me
