Default Handheld Disable Question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

Using BES 4.1.0.38

I have a minor problem in that there is a blackberry that hasnt been able to communicate with our BES for 2 days.

0If i were to send "Set password and lock handheld" to a device.
or
"Erase data and disable handheld" to a device.

Would this happen when the device was powered on?

Secondly.

The user that has lost the handheld, wants a replacement handheld ASAP.

So i need to basically wipe the handheld information and delete/recreate the users account in the BES.

Will the old handheld still get locked or the data erased when it gets turned on? Even though i've had to recreate the account and point the account to a new blackberry in the meantime.

Finally if the above cant be done, is there anyway of creating a 2nd blackberry account for the same user?

If you want to go down that route then

1) Send the erase data and disable handhled command.

2) Remove user from the BES

3) Re-add user to the bes, clearing stats

4) Pull new device from stock and activate against that user account.

The old device (if turned off) will get wiped when it next connects to the cell network (GPRS) and receives the kill command from RIM. The Kill command is associated with the individual device and not the user account.

Not sure why you'd want a second user account for the same user - this is not possible unless you have a separate mail server account.

HTH

Thanks for the reply i didnt think the 2nd account would be possible and really was a sort of last resort idea.

If i can definetly get the old handheld wiped even after i delete the user from the BES and activate them on a new blackberry then thats what i will do.

I was under the impression the user account was the link between the BES Server's queued command and the blackberry and after removing them i was worried that the Blackberry would not get wiped.

So thank you , you have solved the problem

Provided that you send the KILL command BEFORE removing their account. Once you've sent the kill command it will either get sent directly to the device or get held on the RIM infrastructure until such a point in time the device is turned back on..

Imagine the CEO's device gets stolen...it gets killed and then he wants a new one 'immediately' if the process didn't work this way then there might be lots of embarrassed faces all round...

The kill command is processed by BES rather the the RIM infrastructure... and the kill command is associated to the user + the PIN number... says KB-04529 - How To - Use the Erase Data and Disable Handheld command
