Default Curve 8530 Virus?

Please Login to Remove!

I set my email to blind copy me on my "sent" emails so I would have the emails I sent from my phone on my computer. Immediately after having done that I started receiving hundreds of "bounced" emails as if I had sent emails out to bad addresses. I am still getting hundreds per day -- I have removed the bcc! but the emails keep coming. They are NOT from my contacts - they are names I do not recognize. Any thoughts?

There is no BlackBerry virus to date.

most likely a email issue on your end or maybe someone you know got a virus and you are getting mail from that infection.

Another possibility is some spammer spoofed your address and the bounces are thus coming back to you. It happens, and happened twice to me, long time ago, before blackberry. Probably just coincidental timing with setting up the bcc.

Or it could be malware on your computer.

But, as knottyrope points out, no cause at this time to suspect the BlackBerry.

EDIT: By the way, DO NOT use your carrier-provided blackberry.net address for registrations, newsletters, etc. Spammers get hold of that and you might as well delete the address.

Thanks for the replies... I don't use BB addresses. I have a Mac -- and before anything ever went to the Mac I was getting spammed. So I do not believe it's on my computer. When this happened to you, how did you stop it? My ISP says it's not their fault, verizon says it's not their fault, BB doesn't even respond -- so no one is offering anything to do except "too bad...so sad." Know anyone who wants to buy a curve? I hate the phone and the lack on BB communication

Someone else is using your e-mail address. A spammer. It is not the BB, or anything else generating these. You get the bounce backs because it appears to be your address.

I don't know who this BB is that you asked for help, but the problem is your address has been compromised.

In my case, I got an initial spike of incoming bounce notices which soon tapered off and stopped. I don't recall exactly, but I don't think it went on more than two or three days. I figure the spammer spoofed my address once or for a short time, then spoofed another address in his list, then another, and so on.

If it is ongoing in your case, I don't know exactly what you can do. Somehow you need to do whatever you can to confirm as best you can that your machine is not sending the emails. I don't know enough to advise you thoroughly on that. Maybe someone else here can give you some tips. Wilders Security Forums Wilders Security Forums - Powered by vBulletin is good and the members there are friendly and eager to help. But there, as here, search and read the stickies first.

EDIT: I do doubt that your machine is sending the emails. The fact that you are getting bounce notices from email from addresses not in your address book indicates some spammer has, as NJ put it, made the emails appear to have come from you.

If what you say is true about the spammer, and I am inclined to maybe, possibly think it is, and it may be pure coincidence that the timing worked out perfectly... still, what can I do to stop it?

Also, BB is Blackberry -- I have posted on as many forums as I can find here, with RIM with anyone who will listen!

Thanks again...

There is nothing you can do, short of closing out that email address and setting up another.

How long has it been going on?

Understand, what has probably happened is some spammer has sent a load of emails appearing to have come from you, maybe with your address in the reply-to field, maybe even with your address as the sending address. If your experience turns out to be like mine, it will stop shortly. But there isn't anything practical you can do to stop it.
