BlackBerrys can play only certain types of videos. Check these in the FAQ.

What video and audio formats are supported?? - BlackBerryFAQ

How do I encode video for use on my device? - BlackBerryFAQ

If you have videos on your computer, you can convert them to work on the BlackBerry using Roxio -- Desktop Manager v. 4.2 SP2 and above.

How do I convert video using Roxio - BlackBerryFAQ

That worked perfectly for me.

I've had the worst time time with videos on my phone. I can seen 3gp and mp4's with no problems but not avi's. I have a friend who can see avi's on his bb but he is using a 8310. I've tried every program out there and nothing works when it comes to avi files for me.

Default BlackBerry Video Converter

Hello.
There are a lot of different codecs & whatnot, but use BlackBerry Video Converter from Seabyrd Technologies, it does what it says on the tin.
It converts every video I have tried, and will even do .vob files too.
Here's the link:
Seabyrd Technologies - Blackberry Video Converter
It has two default settings-Pearl and 8800. It work just fine on my 8300. You can adjust the screen width/height so probably work for 8900/Bold as well.
Best of all... It's free! (or donate if you find it useful-it is)
Hope this is of use!

Did you try converting them with Roxio?

I have never been able to get my curve 8310 to play a video. I was hoping that the new OS would change that, but no matter who or what I do to convert, nothing. I figured it was something with Centennial Wireless, who only a year ago picked up BB, many there haven't been able to help. So my question would be, can the provider block certain phones ability to fully function?

Can you play the video supplied with the Blackberry? The little 30 second demo one?

AVI is just a wrapper. A given AVI can be encoded with one of countless codecs out there. You need to make sure that you're using a supported codec and if not that you're converting to a supported codec.
