Smile Best Pre-Paid SIM for Mexico

Please Login to Remove!

I recently unlocked my Storm (for free on Verizon) and am going to Mexico later this year. Does anyone have any tips for cheap international calling/data while I am in Mexico?

Verizon wants $0.99 per min and about ~$5 per/MB of data.

That is what I have paid in the past, I am wondering if there are cheaper alternatives, like a pre-paid SIM..

Thanks!

I believe Telcel in Mexico has pre-paid BIS service, but I am not sure how much it costs. Might be worth Googling.

They do, and that is the best bet if you will be there long enough to warrant it.

Just be sure to detach your Storm from Verizon BIS before departing.

hey guys, I use the prepaid BIS from Telcel in mexico, the good thing is you can purchase the service in units of 7, 15 or 30 days, and its quite cheap to.

How do you purchase the telcel service? Do you buy a sim from there website? Do you have a link? Does the BIS plan include any voice?

You should visit a Telcel shop upon arrival. You will need to pay for voice in addition to the prepaid BIS.

It is a lot like the prepaid Sidekick service T-Mobile USA sells.

Sounds like a hassle, unless I can buy something ahead of time I will just stay with the Verizon $0.99 per/min and ~$5 per/mb for now. I am only going to be there 5 days, how much damage could I really do.

I'm not sure if you will be able to use GSM in Mexico, as there also are CDMA service, last summer I went there with my 8830 from Sprint I was all the time with CDMA and worked fine, I didn't tried to use a local GSM sim thought.

Regards

GSM will absolutely work, though not on an 8830. Mexico operates on the same bands as the US (850/1900).
