Default RIM Blocking Retail Units PINs being used in the U.S???

Please Login to Remove!

Found this on the CrackBerry.com forums. Does anyone using a retail unit have this issue?!?

Quote:
ok my self and many people i know have purchased bolds from ebay.. from international sellers from land near and far. ive had 3 in total. two att branded one un-branded...

all of the pins are locked. no email no bbm. no blackberry registration.

i spent 3 hours on the phone going back and fourth between att and rim and back and fourth...

finally i got on the phone with a down to earth rim rep.. who told me.

"any bold you buy from anywhere in the world that you try to hook up to any united states
carrier will block the pin as soon as it tries to register to the blackberry
network in the usa. He said its in there system its automatic and the only
thing that can be done because he said they received about 100 calls in the
last week... Is the pin will be released once the bold itself is released in
the USA... So basically no email no blackberry messanger untill its
officially released.... He also went on saying the delay in the us is
because of the high standards the phone companies have on the os. And he
said any models sold now don't have the newest os updated release because
the final one goes out tomorrow monday the 18th. So I'm just going to wait
it out I guess about 10 people I know who have baught one branded all diff
names all the pins locked once they tried to connect. Its not permanant.

Download opera mini for browsing if u keep it. Its 10x faster cause with the
pin locked when ur on the web it bounces you around through att and rim and
bonces back sending yo an error message or severly lags... Any other help
feel free to email...

so anyone with a bold thats pin isnt working hope this helps..

Well, that's some not so good news. My T-Mobile Germany Bold is at the mercy of AT&T..

That's true. I'm not even a customer of AT&T and I still have to wait for the release. Isn't that some irony..

I guess that means any Bold owner from one of the lucky countries who have the Bold introduced had better not visit the USA!

Default Is this confirmed?

I wonder if this is a confirmed issue with everyone who has non-US Bolds? I am traveling to Canada the middle of this week and planning to buy a Rogers version, but will not do so if it won't work in the US until September.

i am less concerned about the firmware/OS as that can be upgraded, but I need the device to fully work when I get it.

That's what I said. RIM won't unblock the PINs until AT&T releases the Bold.

I will be able to let you know by Wednesday/Thursday. My Bold is in the mail.

That's a BIG "phew!" At least the fanatics that "have to have it right now" didn't buy a device that gets permanently disables like the pre-release buyers. It would have been nice of RIM to warn about this however. I can see them protecting AT&T's exclusivity deal, but a head up would have been cool.

Hopefully folks with new Rogers devices using AT&T service will be able to report in on their experience. i won't be in Montreal until Thursday and will want to buy one then.

I got a laugh out of the high standards of the OS. Once At&t places their bloaded theme on the device, I am sure it will be the usual At&t high standard. (sorry, but I never liked their theme on 8700, 8800 or 8310.)
And we have to wait for all the R&D as their engineers tweek and fiddle to make sure we as end users know who the phone carrier is. (ack - off my soapbox again - sorry)

I guess we all are going to wait including those who spent the extra money to get the device and then beg At&t to unlock the device. (just lovely - I would buy one from Germany or Canada now but think I am just going to leave it alone until the release the device)

I already coined this in an earlier post. Waiting for the Bold is is like quitting smoking. You struggle everyday trying to stay away from a cigarette (or waiting for the Bold delivery to your local AT&T store.)

i have just had the keyboard membrane replaced. i been using my curve in teh interim, and now when i try to register my 8820 on optus, it no longer registers :(

terrrrrrrrrrrible!

false alert it seems - problem with optus' side. looks like this bold excitement is catching up to me.

How was it using SureType for the time while your QWERTY device was down for repair? I sometimes loved using my 7105t for a while, just for the nostalgia. I still miss my thumb wheel.
