Thumbs down Unlocked BB - using on another carrier

Please Login to Remove!

Hi,

I would like to know how I can use my Cingular 8800 on another carrier. I am going to be spending some time in India and I need my BB. I was thinking that I was going to use the Cingular International for BB but it was turning out to be too expensive so I have decided to get BB service in India. I wanted to know, even if I get my SIM unlocked on Cingular, can I get it setup in India using the BB service as well as a phone.

My questions are the following:
1. If I get a data plan (not BIS) on the Indian carrier, will I still be able to hit the Cingular BlackBerry servers? I am on the BIS.
2. If not, how do I configure my BB to work with the Indian carrier for the BIS service? I can provisioning from the Indian carrier to have the BIS service.
3. Where is this BB specific information stored? Is it on the SIM?

If I can't switch providers, I'm going to end up buying a BB in India (for no reason since I'm pretty happy with the 8800).

Thanks!

If the BB is unlocked and your International carrier is GSM and has BB data service, it should work. However, be prepared for very high international roaming charges.

If you get a local SIM card with BB service in India that should work. I am sure there are experts here who can assist. The company I used to work for always had T-Mobile for International travel.

If you get a local (India) SIM card WITHOUT A BLACKBERRY DATA PLAN all you will have is voice and SMS text. You will not be able to connect to the RIM infrastructure and you will have no data. Nothing.

There are carriers in India selling blackberry data plan.

Buy local SIM with blackberry data plan, put it in your Cingular 8800 and assuming device is unlocked you would not need to do anything else.

That's true if you are on a BES. But if you are on BIS you will have to configure the local carrier BIS to get your e-mail.

So, what is going to happen if I take my unlocked BIS blackberry with T-Mobile SIM and swap that SIM to Cingular SIM with blackberry data plan? Will it not just work?

Basically, I take the BB to India - swap SIM cards, setup my BIS service with the local provider, and voila - my BB works with the new number and downloads all my email like usual? No other configuration setting to do on the BB itself? The Host Routing Table, BIS servers, etc - everything is on the SIM card?

Make sure the SIM card has the BlackBerry Data Plan on it and you should be good to go.

Nope -- BIS is carrier-specific. Note how each carrier has its own BIS site, for example...

That's it. You only need to mess with HRT if the service books aren't automatically pushed to your BB. Normally, this isn't an issue. Nothing's stored on the SIM card. The SIM just ties your device to your wireless account.

It will work but you'll need to set up BIS with the new carrier. BIS won't "follow" you from carrier to carrier like BES does. See my reply to amit2001...
