RIM to launch 6.1 update as BlackBerry 7 OS at BlackBerry World next week?

By Jacob Schulman posted Apr 27th 2011 4:58PM

CrackBerry has just dropped word via "numerous sources" that RIM will be revealing the next iteration of its mobile OS at the fast approaching BlackBerry World conference -- and no, it's still not QNX. Despite consistent rumblings that upcoming devices like the Bold Touch, and Monaco would be launching with OS 6.1, it seems that RIM has decided to re-brand the update completely as BlackBerry 7, perhaps to increase the value proposition and differentiate new devices being announced along with it. However, the site also speculates that current phones running BB6 may not get any BB7 action right off the bat -- which could make sense, given that new features like NFC are only present in upcoming devices. All this is naturally unconfirmed, but if this is indeed yet another version of the BlackBerry OS, well, that certainly won't help the platform get any more developer love.

Thumbs down Re: RIM to launch 6.1 update as BlackBerry 7?

RIM announces the BlackBerry 7 OS-News - Know Your Cell

Well... I personally find the information about RIM keeping 6.1 /OS7 from the latest devices, Torch etc, a kick in the balls... To commit to a particular phone (Torch) for 2 years, expecting great things, and 6 months later find out it has been made 'obsolete'... ie: no update to OS7. This Pisses me off big time. I mean really RIM, are you now trying to send the last of your dedicated fans elsewhere. I could understand maybe a year down the road. but at this point, I am seeing red, and not feeling the love for RIM right now... And that's saying a lot since I have been a dedicated Blackberry devotee since 2000.

Whats a guy to do? Maybe I should have stuck it out with my Bold9000 for a few more months... Not to mention, the new Torch coming soon with its higher res and 2x faster processor... Sounds like an Apple move to me....

Hmmm... can you say "irate"

I can't express myself better. It seems that RIM decided using Apple's strategy, the problem is that even tho we know apple could make their devices somehow better and they always manage to deliver it, RIM is lagging behind a year with its devices. Its pretty annoying imo...
