There are three ways of connecting to the Internet on a BlackBerry. BIS, BES, and a SOCKET connection. Lots of programs will automatically detect, and let you modify it. Others will only use BIS or BES. From what I understand (please correct me if I am wrong), you can only use a SOCKET connection with WiFI. Which means the local browser will work, and same with Opera because it can use a socket for internet. I have never seen such an option in Google Maps. It probably does not connect using a socket, and only BIS and BES. If this is true, there is no way you will get it to work. Someone may have a clue on how to configure it to use a socket connection though .... but that setting is not readily available from their software interface.

I got mine within a few seconds dapope. Did you have the email sent to your blackberry address? If so, verify mail is working. If it is not, try service books or battery pull. If it IS working, make sure you typed the email address correctly.

They may also be having delay problems in mail sending that were not there when I tried it earlier today. Or, they may be having technical difficulties at the moment.

Just weird that you can DL it using wifi browser, but you can not use the actual program....unless you have a data plan

Its not weird because there are three ways to connect, and all programs are different. You an download because the BB browser can use BIS, BES and SOCKET. Google Maps probably isn't written to support a SOCKET connection. That is a Google thing, and has nothing to do with BlackBerry. They should at least provide a settings menu the allows you to select the connection.

Someone with an 8820, or 8320 can test it. See how fast it takes to scroll through the maps with just EDGE. Then, from the same place, activate WiFI. I bet it will be the same speed since it is not using a socket connection for data.

I don't know if that was being sarcastic .... but ya, I see your frustration. The Google developers should have put in a settings menu, allowing you to select which connection to use. My guess is that since WiFI BlackBerries are now a reality, something like this will be implemented somewhere down the road.

Does Blackberry "Maps" require a data plan to use???
If so...is there any program out there that can just use the "Wifi browser"?

I think you have to have a data plan. When they first introduced WiFi, they did say that WiFI use would be limited.

Ya. It sucks I know. But, the only way they could do it with all programs, is if they created a software gateway that runs in the background, converting BIS requests to socket and vice versa. This would probably tax the BlackBerry though .... still, I bet it is possible for someone to write.
