Question 7290 Discontinued on Cingular?

Please Login to Remove!

While attempting to swap my 7100g for a 7290 (Sure Type is driving my crazy), several of the Cingular stores I have spoken with here in LA are saying something that sounds like either Cingular is going to stop supporting this phone or RIM is discontinuing it.

Anyone have any info? Would be appreciated.

Um...BS? Just my guess. It's a relatively new model, and they're selling like hotcakes.

They're probably discontinuing it because it occasionally has to be rebooted

I was hoping a upgrade to the OS would soon fix that...

Same problem with my 7100g. Seems 4.0 is "less than stable"

I've read in other threads that downgrading to 3.8 may work- I just exchanged my 7100g for a 7290 (and I tried the 7520 for a few days but Nextel's voice quality was no good for me) so I'll see how that works out. The 7100 was crashing and slowing down after about 1 weeks worth of what I would consider "normal" traffic (see my other thread: 7100 Crawls )

I guess I'm lucky--I haven't had a single problem with my 7290 on 4.0 for over three months <looks for wood to knock on>

Thanks. I'm happily living with my 7290 now so I'm ending this thread.

Not sure if that was a joke or not, but I've been using Cingular's 7290 for months without a single reboot. I have handheld 4.0 with BES 4.0 and use Cingular's Xpress Messaging heavily.

Same with me and my 7290 on Cingular. Total bliss with it since I bought it when it came out eight months ago. Not a single reboot. Rugged and reliable 4.0, with nary a problem since I upgraded when it debuted.

Sounds like a couple of bad jokes to me. Why even throw out such an absolute rumor? Mark, shut this sucker down, before it causes more grief for newbies looking at buying a 7290 with Cingular, or upgrading to 4.0.

You want the thread locked because yours works great? I figure you should feel lucky that you have the perfect one you do but that in no way negates or speaks for the rest of us. I have had to reboot mine a couple of times, I'm not complaining or ready to trash it nor did I imply it was often, just stating a fact. Am I not allowed to state a fact or are you trying to say RIM is perfect cuz we won't let anyone say they had a problem?

My wife has an Alero with the 3.4 engine and many of those engines had to have the head gaskets replaced. Hers has 60k and hasn't. Does this mean the other people were just joking and had their replaced for no reason?

Sorry for upseting you. Keep it going, I guess... But I wasn't saying that the thread should be locked because my unit was working fine. Check out the subject of this thread, and the original postings, please, and read my comment in that context. I just figured that spreading a wicked rumor that RIM was discontinuing the 7290, and that Cingular was going to stop supporting my unit was seriously off. And that the rumor should be stopped because some people might just believe the postings that Cingular and RIM are ditching the 7290 -- and causing them to erroneously stay away from a great unit and a good carrier. Just look at how many views this thread has received already.
