Im looking into buying my first blackberry device and wanted to ask is there any disadvantage to buying a second hand device?? please can you shed some light on this subject?
Others report problems getting a used device "detached" from the previous user's service. Not to say it's a big deal...but it can be a pain in the neck if the previous user hasn't disconnected his/her service and/or plan.

how is the phone connected to the last owner? thought once i place my sim card in it would put up my services and carrier etc?
A BlackBerry is not (just) a phone. It also has a PIN/IMEI number which ties it to an account with the carrier for mail and internet, called the BIS account. If the PIN/IMEI is not released by a previous user, you will need to get the carrier or previous user to release it.
Secondly (all this IS in the link above) if the BB was used on a corporate BES account, there could security policies, etc., on the BB which will keep you from using some applications and/or loading software to the BB.
Buying here is a good place to start. I've bought from sellers on this forum and others, and have not had a bad experience yet. eBay on the other hand.....
