Default BES, Domino AND Lotus Notes on the same machine?

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all,

Reading through previous posts, I saw that installing BES on your existing Domino server is possible - although not recommended. In addition, in the
documentation it is mentioned that Lotus Notes client software should
not be installed on the computer on which you will install BES.
This is not the case for our organization. LN client IS installed on the computer where we plan to install BES, and we cannot remove it due to
other dependencies.

Does anyone know what are the consequences of installing BES, Domino and
Lotus Notes client on the same machine?

thanks,

-Teli

A worm hole will open up in your datacenter and suck all of your IT staff into another dimension.

For starters... BES MUST be on an existing Domino server. This isn't optional.
Do not install the Lotus Notes client on this machine. You're asking for trouble if you do it.
Since you already have LN and Domino Server on the same box... don't add BES. Pick another domino server without the LN client.
Even if you do somehow manage to get it all working... RIM will not support this configuration when it does eventually fail. I don't know that you'd want to take that chance.

Take BES out of the picture for a moment. IBM does not even suggest running the Notes client on the same machine as a Domino server. (Yes I know the nlnotes.exe program exists when you install domino, but you are strongly cautioned to not run it.) IBM has provided the Full Access Administration capability of the Domino Administrator client program, and you can run from your local admin PC to replace the functionality (bypassing ACLs on databases) that running the client on the PC did.

BTW, what dependency requires you ro run a mail client on a server? (this isn't a terminal server for end users, is it?). Most admin tools should have their own mailer or SMTP mailer program. And if they don't, you can always use a simple 3rd party tool like blat.exe to send emails. I can't think of a role other than a Terminal Server that would need a Notes client in a server. So what sort of a set up do you have that flies counter to this? You should really find a way to get the Notes client off of your server.

See IBM Technote # 7003449 Understanding the Full Access Administrator Feature in Domino Release 6

Default Probably don't need client

If you have something that needed the Lotus Notes client (I've seen where utility programs req'd Notes client to send email), it's likely that it was just needed for the DLLs to communicate with a Notes/Domino server. If the server is installed, you likely don't need the client.

In fact, most Notes admins know that the client *is* actually installed in just a server installation. You have to run nlnotes.exe manually, however it works. As previously mentioned, it was a classic way to somewhat bypass ACLs.

I'd try without it, otherwise, you'll run into issues. One of the problems that you encounter is that the registry can only have a single application/dll handler registered for a file type. Depending on which application gets installed last, that will be the one assigned. There are several other registry entries that get confused when multiple clients are installed. Developers are well aware of these, as they normally run multiple versions (R6, R7, R8) on the same machine. Any third party applications, like BES Desktop Manager, blow-up as soon as you do this.

Due to the nature of the people that are using BES (ie executives), I would seem very unwise to run it on less than optimal hardware. The cost of one executives downtime for a few hours is often far more than the cost of a new server.

To be clear, that statement refers to an existing Domino mail server. BES has to be install on a system running Domino. You cannot install BES on a system that does not have Domino installed.
