Default initial setup question

Please Login to Remove!

hi,

i just got my playbook and trying to set it up, can you please tell me if we dont have wi-fi access can we still complete the initial setup as i am struggling to complete the setup bcoz i m in my office without wifi.

if your answer is yes that we must need wifi to complete the setup, what if i goto a cafe with wifi access to complete the setup, then come back and will then be i able to pair the playbook with my smartphone without wifi?

thanks
Nabs

You have to set up the Playbook by connecting it to WiFi network for it's initial setup.

And if you search this forum you will find a posting about the trouble one user was having trying to set his up using public WiFi at Starbucks and a few other places. Just couldn't do it. Finally upgraded his home router to WiFi and completed without a hitch.

Yeah, that was me....

What I actually did was go back to the GeekSquad desk at Best Buy and got them to log my Playbook onto the store wi-fi, which completed the initial setup download quite efficiently. Part of the problem with using Starbucks and other public wi-fi hotspots may be that the initial download process on the Playbook doesn't jibe with the hotspot login process. As well, it seems that a lot of public wi-fi hotspots are programmed to disallow access to large download sites.

Everyone will also be pleased to learn that I managed to track down the setup disk for my home router and activated wi-fi there too. The Playbook works a treat when it has a solid wireless connection. Of course I attach it to the Net via USB cable to do any real updates....I'm an old telecom guy, and I don't really trust anything but copper wire...

And the remaining question -- once you setup, can you later pair with your BlackBerry smartphone without access to wifi -- the answer is yes. You will be presented with the option to pair during setup, as I recall, but you don't have to do it right then. You can defer until later.
