Default Encryption - Getting the right balance?

Please Login to Remove!

I guess YMMV is the real answer to this, but what's your take on sensible encryption policies?

A part of me thinks "encrypt the lot", but that seems to stuff a lot of things, such as using the phone to download a file, then connecting to your PC via USB and copying it back.

I guess I'm trying to understand why it seems if you encrypt the phone/card you can't even copy files from the phone using Desktop Manager after entering your password?

It seems a bit of a hole in the functionality unless I misunderstood something?

I would imagine it's because you're accessing it as a "USB drive" and not accessing via the BB that has the decryption algorithm. The password is simply a quick and dirty method of not showing it as a drive until it's provided.

I find that other than the SD card, encryption is not needed. If you have a password, you can't to the data without it. If you have no password, the data is readable anyway.

Thanks both. CanuckBB that's an interesting concept and one I did ponder - work on the theory that if someone cracks your password in 10 goes you're screwed anyway, so let the password deal with wiping the device, and encrypt the memory card.

The problem/question still remains though - is it possible to download a file, say an Office document, over BES to the Blackberry, then transfer it to your PC using a USB cable whilst being secure from someone who found/stole the device being able to access that file (assuming the phone is passworded).

If the file resides in the phone's memory, and the phone is password protected, then the file is secure. If it's in an encrypted SD card, it's secure. If it's on an unencrypted SD card, it's possible to copy it.
