Just restarted after deleting espell. Device came back with edge, where I had EDGE pretty consistently before. What is difference and how will it limit my use? AT&T BIS on 8310.. Thanks.

EDGE allows data you must have EDGE to get data

Lower case edge allows text and cell service no data

Aha. Fortunately the edge situation didn't last but a couple of minutes. Wonder why this happens?

A blackberry tech told me that lowercase edge means it is trying to connect to this BIS.

I was told this same thing. My phone was stuck at the lower case 'edge' for a few hours and upon calling support I was told it happens sometimes and a restart clears up the issue every time.

It's trying to connect to the BlackBerry Network - not just BIS. It happens if you are BES only also. Basically the device can not get an IP address from the BlackBerry network. Until it does, all you have is voice and SMS (as mentioned above).
