That is really not true. RIM produces the updates and the carriers release them as they become ready to support them. Just because an OS is from another carrier doesn't mean it will not run smooth. Likewise, just because an OS
is from your carrier doesn't mean it
will run smooth.
Most of the time, the later the OS the better it is. The two exceptions to this are
1. 4.2.0 was smoother for multi-tap on the Pearl. 4.2.1 (all versions/all carriers) have double letter issues.
2. Curve OS's later than 4.2.2.67 will not allow a browser on the TMo network.
I have been running other carrier's OS's on BB's for 3 years and haven't had issues.
