Default Viewing Word Docs on BB Curve

Please Login to Remove!

I would really like to carry some important Word docs around with me on my BlackBerry and be able to view them, not update them. The 4.3 version of the software that Verizon provides does not include Docs To Go. I know I can view Word and PDF docs on the BB if they arrive as email attachments, but I don't want to email docs to myself which contain sensitive information. Is there any way (without acquiring third party software) to copy Word docs to my BB as individual files and then view them? The BB software obviously contains the capability of displaying Word docs, since it can do that for attachments.

Can you get a 4.5 cdma OS for your device??? That way you can use docs to go. Have you tried putting the docs to the media card and opening them from there???

I would try to install them directly on to your memory card from your computer. Load the card back into your Berry, and try to open them that way.

Thanks for the suggestion. But where on the memory card, and once they are there, what will access them?

I can connect the BB to my PC with a USB cable, and it shows up as a removable disk. (I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1.) There is one main folder named BlackBerry, and subordinate to it are five folders named music, pictures, ringtones, videos and voicenotes. I tried once earlier to copy a Word document and a plain text document to the music folder, but when I navigated to that folder on the BB, those files didn't appear.

As a test just now, I created a new folder named documents under the BlackBerry folder and copied some sample Word, PDF and plain text documents to it. But what do I use on the BB to go looking for them? If I click the Media icon, I can scroll through Music, Videos, Ring Tones, Pictures and Voice Notes. These correspond to the folders that are subordinate to the BlackBerry folder. But how do I find my new documents folder?

It doesn't matter where on the card you put the files. You need to install OS 4.5 and then you can use DocsToGo to explore the card and open the files.

Although, when you install 4.5 and DocsToGo, it will create a 'documents' folder within the 'blackberry' folder.

I wish I could install OS 4.5. Verizon Wireless has not made it available, and the last time I talked with them, they would not say if or when they will.

Question Permission denied?

Hi,

I tried opening a document using docs to go but it asks for permission to allow word to go to lsiten to messages. So I checked do not ask to listen to messages and ALLOW. It kept giving me the same permission screen. Then, I tried opening another document and checked the other one "Do not ask for file" then ALLOW. Same thing. Finally, I went into docs to go directly and I get "Permission denied."

Shall I not check either of the "Do not ask for file: boxes?

Thanks.

^^^Ugh. Now it won't even give me option to ALLOW. It just gives me the "permission denied" message.

You don't need Verizon to release the OS. All 8330 OS's will work on all 8330 devices, regardless of carrier. Just follow the instructions in this thread:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ilanguage.html

If you're worried about warranty issues in case you have to send it in, you can always go back to the Verizon approved OS later. It's kind of like a PC, you can always format and install a new OS.

Uninstall DocsToGo from your device and then plug in back in to Desktop Manager and reinstall.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I uninstalled the Doc-to-go and then I tried re-sinstalling by going into app loader. But Docs-to-go didn't re-install! Could you please tell me how to re-install, thanks!!

Make sure that when you go into App Loader, DocToGo is checked and it says Upgrade or Install next to it. If it says None next to while it's checked, then uncheck it, let it uninstall, and then check it and install it.

Just in case you're a little worrisome over not using the Verizon OS, I followed the instructions on the thread that was linked above. Total time took about 15 min from start to finish. I have not had one single issue with the new OS, I've had it loaded about two weeks now.

Thanks Corey - do you know why the apps don't show? I only see the 3rd party apps listed. This happened once before a long time ago but I don't remember the fix!

Thanks!

You need to install the OS on to your PC and then delete the vendor.xml file.

Hi there,

It's installed on my PC (I did the upgrade a few days ago) and I didn't have to delete the vendor.xml file because I'm on T-Mo and the 45.0.81 OS that I downloaded is the T-Mo release. I only like to download the official T-Mo release so I can keep stuff like MyFaves plus I'm not that great of a bb tweaker (deleting xml files and such!).

Just FYI, the myFaves will stay there even if you don't use an official T-Mo release. All OS's have it, it just isn't active until you get the service book from T-Mo.

Open Desktop Manager and go to Help > About. What does it say under the Device Software tab?

It just lists "software". Oh, and the DM is version is 4.6.0.12 according to the 'about' info even though RIM lists it at 4.6.0.15.

Thanks, that's good to know. But I'm still not too confident in my file-tweaking skills.
