Default Upgrading from Small Business (BES Express) to Professional, possible?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,

We are running BES Small Business or I guess BES Express, the one with the 15 user limit. Well, lo and behold, I just added the 15th user yesterday and of course this morning I hear from another guy who wants in. Sorry guy.

I was told by BB support that it's not possible to do an upgrade from my BES to Professional. They said I'd have to uninstall and then install Professional. No word on if I could migrate the database/users or anything. They were very happy to quote me the $2799 for a seamless upgrade to the full BES though.

Poking around the BB website I did find a page that purported to have the upgrade from my BES to Pro. I even downloaded the package. It's called bpsn_414A.exe. This was a few days ago and I can't find the page now. Does anyone know if this will work?

If not, any tips on uninstalling BES and installing Pro, migrating users, etc?

Thanks for the help.

I went from BESX to BES Pro to increase my user count.
Worked well.
I cant remember what versions I had but it was in the last 6 months.
I may have posted about it some where here.

BlackBerry - BlackBerry Professional Software

Its as easy as adding a service pack.

You can migrate to the BlackBerry® Professional Software from BlackBerry® Enterprise Server xxx8211; Small Business Edition Version 4.0 or
later. If you have a small business solution that is earlier than Version 4.0, you must upgrade to Version 4.0 or later before you migrate to
the BlackBerry Professional Software

aha! That's the page I found and where I downloaded the file I have.

So it's possible. Cool. Why would RIM support say it's not?

Thanks.

FYI, going to BES full version you add the keycode...that's it...

Don't know, but having worked with RIM Support, sometimes their advice is questionable.

So, this upgrade will take you from BES Express to BPS. WHich is basically the same software as BES except with the limit raised to 30 users.

Unfortunately, after which, you need to upgrade to to BES for 2799 (which we painfully did. )

Darthkim,
We have done the same thing.
Was painless except for the price. But for 2799 you do get 5 cals.

Ok, a bit confused about this. Have 3 more questions/things I need clarified if you'll endulge me

1. We're using the Blackberry Enterprise Messenger for Sametime (we're a Domino shop) right now, will BPS support it?

2. We push apps to our users (Google Maps, etc), I think BPS supports this, correct?

3. If I upgrade from BESX to BPS, it's then possible to upgrade to BES full (the $2799 version) via an upgrade pack?

Thanks.

BlackBerry - BlackBerry Professional Software

.... it won't support use of the Enterprise IM client

Yes you can. I did it this year. And it too was like adding a service pack.

Is it just run setup.exe and then it will be done without any user intervention or should I stop any service before upgrading?

Just run the EXE, it will stop all the services.

Make sure you back up the DB for that "just in case".

Can you tell me how to backup the database and where to locate it? I am very new to this. Thanks.

Did the backup and then run the setup.exe of BB Prof 4.1.4 but got the following message:

Upgrading a Blackberry Professional Software full vesion with a Blackberry Professional Software SMB is not supported. You must acquire a Blackberry Professional Software full version before upgrading.

What does this mean? I downloaded the V4.1.4 from:
BlackBerry - BlackBerry Professional Software

OK, I restarted all Blackberry services and then ran the setup again and it went through the licensing screens. Then I got the Exchange Server Permissions (domain\besadmin) warning:

"The setup application could not verify the MS Exchange permissions for the MS Windows account. Before you continue, verify that the permissions are correct."

What should I do?

If bes express worked before it should not be an issue.

I logged in as BESAdmin to the BES to do the installation and got the permissions warning.

Probably I should login as Administrator to the BES to do the installation. What do you think?
