Note that a kindle app was released for some of the more advanced BlackBerrys today. Likely one will be released for the Google phones. This is the real competition for the iPad.

Does anyone have the iPad yet (that can discuss it)? Doubt it. That said, I'm not sure how to answer your question until the iPad is released.

And what about Kindle for reading? Currently, you can read your Kindle books on a Kindle (obviously), on a PC, on a Mac (soon), on an iPhone/iPod Touch, and on a BlackBerry. I expect it will also be available on the iPad one day, as well as on Android devices.

Really? So the tiny screen on a phone trumps the larger display on the iPad? I would rather have a Kindle (or similar device, including possibly the iPad) to read on versus a cell phone. Just my preference, of course.

This might be one of the most ridiculous things I've read in a long time.

Cell phone screens will get bigger. I read documents sent to me on my Storm 2 all the time. What is the difference? Using a cell phone to carry around music was considered ridiculous at first. I have music and videos on my Storm. Think long term. If Apple did the iPad would have a speakerphone function and full GPS with app so it could actually replace several devices in the initial product release. An iPad type device would be a great replacement device for car GPSs as it has a relatively large screen.

I agree, I read all the time on my iphone but there is no comparison to reading on the larger screen.

I did not say the cell phone is the best way but:

I have to carry a laptop and a cell phone. The iPad cannot replace the functions of the laptop due to software and hardware I use for programming protection relays. (Smart grid anyone?) The cellphone could be replaced by something slightly bigger but it would have to emulate my cellphone including the GPS function. In addition I sometimes carry a digital camera as I need about 10 - 12 meg resolution on some of the items that I document so the pictures can be blow up to show some details. So how will the iPad in it's current configeration help me? I am better off with the kindle app for the BlackBerry as I cannot load some items on the company laptop. I could read a book while flying using the cellphone. Again it is not the best but the screen on my S2 ain't that bad and it is a workable cost effective solution. Or I can carry an old fashioned book with me as most of what I read is not in electronic form except for the technical stuff in pdf format which I can read on the laptop.

I got me an iPad last night.... It is pretty sweet!

Yes it has some downfalls like no flash (yet) but it's a pretty sweet device....

- no Flash
- no camera
- no print capability
- VGA adapter works when it wants to
- can't be charged on any PC or laptop (exception being brand new high end MacBooks)

Typing on it now. I love it...

I'm rocking my new iPad as well. Very cool little device thing. Not sure why I need it but it certainly is cool.
