Default Extremely Slow EA since moving to BES 5.0.2

Please Login to Remove!

We are having an issue with device activations on BES 5.0.2. New users with nothing in their mailbox activate quickly. 5 minutes or so. However with existing users that get new devices the activations are taking in excess of an hour. However if I try and activate these same users on our old BES 4.1.7 server they activate in 15 minutes or so.

Something has changed with the EA process between 4.1.7 and 5.0.2. I have been working with BB support for 3 weeks now on this issue and they have no straight answer for me.

I dont know what else to do, I dont want to go back to BES 4.1.7.

Any thoughts?

Ping times are <1ms, same rack, same subnet.

BES is Windows 2008 R2 64 bit, Exchange 2007 Windows 2008 SP2 64 bit.

I have gone through all the troubleshooting steps that most of you will think of. Static agents, moving mailboxes, confirming mapi & cdo versions, disabling pim sync items, different handhelds, different sim cards, everything.

This has got to be an issue with BES 5.0.2 as these same users activate without issue on BES 4.1.7

I've had the same issues.

I'm not sure what actually works but in the past I have just run a quick diagnostic on the device, deleted the user from the BES, re-added them, and then performed the EA.

For us this seems to work even though it really doesn't seem to make sense.

One thing to note that in terms of system resources usage, if your BES 4.1.6 and 5.0.2 have all components installed on the same machine, 5.0.2 is definitely going to comparatively uses more.

Try disabling IPv6 on the BES server, also disable TCP window scaling feature in windows 2008.

Should I disable TCP scaling on both the BES and Exchange?

Done. What about TCP chimney offload? Should I disable that as well? It was part of the same Microsoft KB that had the RSS disable command.

if BES is not working for you yet, try it and see if it helps.

Still no Dice. I disabled all the features mentioned both on the OS and NIC level and the activation is still slow. One thing I did however was that with one of the users I was having issues with, I removed all items from their calendar and the activation went through in about 10 minutes. So it seems the activation is getting hung up on the calendar.

If this is the case did RIM change the way the BES looks at calendar entries? We never had issues like this in BES 4.1.7, activations would jsut zip right through. It seems to be happening too often though for it to be a one off thing.

Just an FYI, the user whose calendar I removed before activation had 3400 calendar entries, wasnt a small calendar.

was slow sync enabled? that can take a few hours.

Did you ever try a wired activation for that user?

Slow sync is always enabled correct? I have tried a wired connection and it still took quite a while, I never actually waited long enough for it to finish.

I guess my issue is that I am comparing BES 5 to BES 4.1. I never had issues like this with old BES, all activations would complete in about 15 minutes. I even re-activated this user on a 4.1.7 BES and it zipped right through the activation process.

Should I turn slow sync off? I have never had activations take this long before.
