Outlook OWA through BIS... configuration problem
Please Login to Remove!
If you enter this information:
url: http://owa.acme.com/exchange
username: acme\bob
password: ******
email address:
mailbox name: bob
It comes up with a URL of http://owa.acme.com/exchange/bob which is not correct. The correct URL is http://owa.acme.com/exchange... no user name should be appended onto it. As a result, it never works. I've also tried leaving the mailbox name empty and it still doesn't work. This is Exchange 2003. Any ideas?

I'm sorry, I don't know the answer to your question, but I wonder if it was a good idea to post so much info on a public forum. I hope you have a very strong password that can't be guessed.

If I hover over my inbox in Safari it's eg: https://owa.acme.com/Exchange/Bob.Smith/Inbox/ so it sounds right. It took me *ages* to work this out, and let me integrate a work OWA account, as my login name (bob) wasn't the same as my mailbox name (Bob.Smith).

I hope that was a joke...lol. I think "Bob at Acme" is fictitious.
I don't remember exactly how I set mine up back when I used BIS, but I remember that after I entered a fake password is the only time it would allow me to enter the OWA settings. I assume you did that?
I would think as long as the OWA link and the mailbox info is entered in correctly, it would work. If they had the wrong formula for the link for OWA systems other people would be experiencing this (it would seem). Have you tried again?

I had similar setup issues for my OWA. Login to your OWA and go to your inbox, then cut and paste the exact URL that's in your browser into BIS. I found that I had a few extra numbers and switches (directories) than your standard OWA address. Good Luck!

Yes it will poll your mailbox every 15 minutes or so. It will login and check for newmail and forward via the RIM Servers to your handheld device.

It looks like that isn't the problem. My user name is appended to the URL on the inbox link. I wish there was some way to debug this, because they aren't giving me any information that might be helpful.
I get "A connection could not be established to [correct url]. Please check that the server name is correct and that the server is available."
Then I get an email with this:
Your attempt to configure the BlackBerry Internet Service to deliver mail to your BlackBerry device from this email account was unsuccessful. This email provides instructions to help with the email account set up.

Yes. It does read/unread, deletes (with 2.3), and sent items. BIS polls the server every 15 minutes or so, so it's far from instant.

Have you checked with your IT folks to see if they allow BIS access? I had this same problem with my BIS access (I am now on a BES), and found out that our IT guys had blocked BB access through BIS. After the uproar, they allowed it back again and it worked.
My understanding with this is that just because owa works, BIS may not.

Going to OWA on your BB is just browsing - no personal mail is stored on the BB. With BIS, personal mail is residing on the BB and due to policy, some companies choose to block it on the BES.

Yea, it is probably blocked by IT. That would not surprise me at all. They do like to make things as difficult as possible.

I don't understand what you mean. How would BIS accessing Exchange be blocked from BES? I don't know how OWA/BIS works so I'm not sure, but that doesn't seem logical to me.

I am not a technology dude, so I am not well versed in the technical aspects of how this works, but I think they know the source of these requests or how they come in (WAP?) Our IT guy said that they know how to block it. Could be through IP or some other means. maybe someone with more savvy knows?

To do this, do you adjust your mailbox in your device or do you change your BIS settings?

That's what I would guess. It would be a pretty simple matter to simply block the big BIS providers' access to the site. I haven't tried the desktop mail connector method, but I would expect that to be blocked, and it seems like a pretty lame solution even if it did work.

Are you using Exchange 2007? If so, BIS does not work and play well with Exchange 2007.

When I go to BIS and put in my owa URL, name, etc it simply says it can not connect. But I can paste the same info into a browser and connect. This is a hosted site, not corporate though, could that be an issue?
