Default Unread marks delays : Server side issue on Domino

Please Login to Remove!

We have BES 5.0 SP3 MR4 on Domino and noticing delays processing unread marks.

Noticed that for few users, it processes the complete mail file (thousands of docs), which takes time. Seems to have started after a recent BES upgrade.

Wondering if anyone else is facing similar issues and/or have possible options...

RIM's tech acknowledged that development is looking into a possible workaround for this issue.

*********
Notice that it processes 82K docs for unread marks, hence delays the delivery to device.

Are all your Domino servers updated to version 8.5.3?

The servers are currently running 8.5.2 FP2.

8.5.3 is scheduled for Oct 4, 2011 release.
Ed Brill - Notes/Domino 8.5.3 launch dates set

We have a test BES server, so I activated the user on the TEST box and the issue repeats on the test box after 24hrs. So, looks like it is somehow linked to the mailbox.

Affected mail files hosted on mail servers in Domino clusters? When you see the delay, was there a mail server cluster failover occur?

The mail servers are still on primary server and there is no failover to process the unread marks.

Basically, the BES initiates the unread marks check every x minutes and for specific users, it decides to check all documents every x minutes.

This may be a regression issue on DT511330 in your BES 5.0.3 MR4.

Previously documented KB:-
Link: KB25798-Mail Server failover causes the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to process excessive Read/Unread marks, which may contribute to BlackBerry Mail Delays

KB25798's environment is such that the mail servers are in Domino cluster. Yours too. I would suggest a check with RIM Support to ascertain this. First time seeing this issue in the newest MR4.

Thanks noname for the detailed response. The mail failover is not happening in this case. Our servers are already at 8.5.2FP2. About 75% of affected users are on Domino 8.5.2FP2 server with Transaction logging and guessing the below SRP is still an issue.

Resolution
The fix for SPR# JPAI8E4NTW is in Domino 8.5.2FP2 and 8.5.3. The Domino mail servers which interact with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server must be upgraded. The Domino Server hosting the BlackBerry Enterprise Server itself does not need to be upgraded.

Thumbs up Re: Unread marks delays : Server side issue on Domino

Issue resolved. It took several mail server outages to resolve the issue.

The delay is caused due to the unread table corruption on the mail file. Marking all mail as READ in the mail file and doing offline nFIXUP, nUPDALL and nCOMPACT -c resolved the issue.

RIM is working on an optional QuickFix (to be released in future) which will disable the unread marks feature for the affected user. (Basically all mail will be delivered as READ until the mail file maintenance is done.
