Default Blackberry 8703e + Tethering + Vista (via USB)

Please Login to Remove!

Ok after many spent hours I figured out how to do it. Not sure that it matters but I disable DEP and UAC.

First you are going to want to download the following items:
=============================================

1) BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.2 SP1
na.blackberry.com/eng/services/desktop

2) VZAccess Software (I used 5.8.7)
vzw.smithmicro.com/default.aspx

Second you need a registry dump from a working machine
===========================================

1) Goto a working machine (like an XP client.) and Export the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Smith Micro\VZAccess Manager - Verizon Wireless
* I will post an export of this on the bottom of this page.

Ok now the fun part!
================
1) Install VZAccess and reboot (don't run the program yet.)
2) Import the Registry File you made from the client.
3) Next install the Blackberry Desktop Manager Software.
4) Connect the device via USB to the Computer
5) Goto Device Manager, locate Standard Modem and change the driver. You will need to force it to use the driver from:
C:Program Files\Verizon Wireless\VZAccess Manager\
Driver Name: "Verizon Wireless Phone HS (1xRTT)"
6) Make sure a warning box comes up and you click to install the driver anyways
7) Next manually setup a new dial-up connection with the following info (connection name must be exact):
Connection Name: "NationalAccess - BroadbandAccess"
Username: "<number>@vzw3g.com" *<number> is area code and number ex: 5555551212
Password: "vzw"
Number to dial: "#777"
8) It will try to connect and more than likely fail, just click skip and setup connection anyways.
9) Now open VZAccess
10) It "Should" work now

NOTES: While this does work and I have done this to many computers there is a I would say a 30% chance when unplugging the phone after its been connected and used it will blue screen the computer. (LOL) This also is why I think Verizon is taking sooooooo long to come out with software.

THANKS: If you liked this information and would like to help I would love to figure out how to setup tethering with Bluetooth. I have tried and failed many times. Also if someone else has posted this then I am sorry but I could not find it.

Thanks! -Jay5

REGISTRY FILE (Save the remaining lines in a .REG file, oh change the <number> to your number without the <>)

Sorry don't know how to do it for Sprint. Although I would think you could install the Desktop Software 4.2 SP1 and manually create a dial up connection using the sprint connection info and it should work without a 3rd party app.

Verizon as always is twisted and screwed in the head, manual dialing isn't an option (the VZAccess app does so prep work on the device before connection) but I used to have a 1x sprint card that worked without the sprint dialing app.

Big things to look for are that the desktop software installed the Virtual Serial Ports and Standard Modem.

If not drivers are found here:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Modem Drivers *the Virtual Serial Ports (there is normally two of them)
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\USB Drivers *the standard modem driver (I think).

Hope it helps let me know,

I have an 8703e from Verizon, and run Vista.
I installed VZ Access Mgr. v5.8.9

Default Alltel tethered modem

Well, thanks to another member here.. Here's how to enabled it:

On your BB
Enter ##000000 and hit the Enter key.
Scroll down to MIP User ID, and change it to say: test
Save it and your BB will reset. After that you should be able to use it as a modem provided you setup your computer properly (instructions here)
On your dial-up connection the phone number to dial is: #777
The username is your 10 digit number @alltel.net, ex:
Password is left blank (no password)

Then follow the steps here
