...does anyone know why this is? It happened out of nowhere. I'll have a new message (email, SMS) in my inbox, but get no notification icon on my home screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

first try a hard reset. disconnect the battery for at least 10 seconds and then re-insert. if this doesn't fix the problem, let me know.
