I bought BEIKS keyboard locker. stopped using it right away though, because it doesnt work with the top key lock... so you either have to use the "keyboard lock" on the top, or "keyboard lock" application -- they dont work together.

Not to mention, it deleted my OEM keyboard lock application. how do i get THAT back? haha

Mine doesn't do that. I have no issues with BEIKS at all. Thats weird.

Really? So if you press the lock button on the top of your phone, you're able to unlock (with BEIKS) via "*+send"? And vice versa?

Default easiest

easiest way to lock/unlock the keyboard: long press on *A to lock and then on the top left to unlock. works like a charm on 9700 with .862

You can always set a security lockout of like 1 or 2 minutes so that the password locked activates within a very early timeframe.

Sorry, I'm a little slow. Can someone spell this out for me?

I upgraded to 5.0.0.714. Before I did so, I used to use the top button to lock the phone and I liked that the phone displayed owner information (along with the time and the number of new messages) whenever I hit a key. I do not like how it just goes to a black screen now.

What is the best way to get the functionality I want? I want to use the top key to lock/unlock and I want the owner information displayed while it's locked. And I don't want to have a password.

Honestly, RIM should have given the user the OPTION to either have the top key lock the K/B or password lock it. How hard is that???

I circumvented by putting the lock icon on the home screen all the way to the right. So, I'm OK with that. The Torch was the same way, so I essentially did the same thing. Actually easier on the Torch cause its a touch screen.

Not possible anymore -- I'm pretty annoyed with this too.

Beiks does not lock the convenience keys, so if you use one for VAD you're back to square one. This is stopping me from upgrading my 9000 to a 9700. I had hopes they would leave the ridiculous lock button off the 9780, but seeing it on the 9800 in an even less useful form (easier to activate accidentally) has me baffled. Apparently someone in design is a sadist and has pictures of the ceo with an underage goat. What motivates companies to do stupid shit like this?

product uniformity... saves money, but can also be a disaster. for example, the 'shield' grille on Acuras, or 'smile' grille on mazdas... garbage

Isn't the lock button a fairly recent act of overt asininity? It is possible (assuming your name isn't Steve Jobs) to admit a colossal blunder and retrace one's steps, right?

Nope. Beiks will only lock after an interval or with their own screen icon. Beiks will only unlock via * send (or whatever you set it to) if Beiks was used to lock. And again it does not, apparently, lock out the convenience keys. So if you want to lock the keyboard only, it's fine. Otherwise it's a waste of time.

Update: Per Beiks the convenience keys are inaccessible to them through the OS. **** you Blackberry. Not only did you jack up a perfectly good functionality, but you prevented developers from fixing your mistake.

+1 . Every day I get closer and closer to moving to the iphone. Just a matter of time before all my BBM contacts are gone, and I have no reason to stay.

Good luck with that. My wife has a Touch she has not put down in three years and my kid is a freak for his iPhone, but you couldn't give me that pos. The interface can't suck enough. I don't need a lot of apps, just a reliable communications platform. Reliable includes being able to trust it not to unlock itself in my pocket. Now some deranged product designer has taken time out from pleasuring himself in a men's room stall to totally ass up the entire top end of the Blackberry line. Oh the humanity.
