Just curious-the carriers provided this information without a subpeona?

I think you have got it backwards my friend. even the newest Phase 3 cell phones do not stay on after 911 being called. They can narrow it down to a house but once the line is dropped the call center can no longer track the cell towers so they only have last known position. Now if dude continued to talk while on 911 it would update as he passed different towers and the coordnates changed.

Depends on the situation. Missing person type stuff they will actively ping the phone without much todo. Searching for a murder suspect you would need a subpeona.

I would believe some type of search warrant or a judges order but not a subpeona

A subpeona would be more for getting the information to court during a trial

Sorry to bring this up from the dead but I ran across some software for a wm6 phone that you can send a text to the phone and it will reply the gps location to you. Has anyone seen this for the bb? Sounds like a great app and wanted to try it out. Works in silent mode so if it is stolen the person who has it doesn't know what's going on. It would e real nice to catch a the person if they stole my phone.
