Changing field layout dynamically

Hi,
I've written my own LabelField that also displays an Icon. The field will display the icon and the text when the field is focused and only the icon when its not. What I'm having a problem with is I want the field layout to shrink when its not displaying the text and increase when it is. I've overwritten layout() to handle this but I can't get the system to call it and repaint the field. So the width of the field stays the same on the screen no matter what is displayed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
