First of all, hello

Ok let's start . . .

I'm from Romania/Europe (Wiki it ) and I've got a 8300 (v4.2.2.141 xxx8211; platform 2.4.0.62) from TIM (Italy) that I use in my VODAFONE (Romania) that has some problems, like:

- I tried to install BB Maps (from here - blackberry.com/devicesoftware/entry.do?code=maps), but after some 20-30 min. when it said on my PC that I successfully installed that software and my phone rebooted, guess what? no maps in my BB. I tried it again, waited a little more, the same thing (no extra memory occupied).
My BB was connected to the PC, it showed an icon on it that it was transferring from the PC to the phone, and I followed all the steps from that site. After I tried it the second time my BROWSER icon from the BB desktop disappeared and when I try to surf the web from my BB it says xxx8220;Your device does not currently have any Book Entries. Please contact your service provider to enable the Browser on your devicexxx8221;. The bloody Browser was working fine (I surfed the hell out of the web) before I tried to download BB Maps.

- I had no xxx8220;I want to create or add an email addressxxx8221; option in my xxx8220;Email Setupxxx8221; from the device xxx8220;Setup Wizardxxx8221; even before the Browser incident. I know it supposed to be there because I read the whole damn BB 8300 101 Demo - blackberrycurve.com/8300demo.

Ixxx8217;m sure there are some other things wrong with my BB so thatxxx8217;s why I decided to upgrade it with the software from this page: blackberryforums.com/general-8300-series-discussion-curve/151500-latest-os-8300-4-5-0-92-4-5-0-69-multilanguage.html - I clicked the xxx8220;Click herexxx8221; link from JSanders post and I ended up on this page - updateservice.t-mobile.net/blackberry/download/folder.do?ref=%2Fservices%2Fftp%2Fproftp%2Fservers %2Fupdateservice.t-mobile.net%2Fanonymous%2FTMUK%2Ffreedownload%2FDev ices]Blackberry - where you have to select a country, and because as you can see there is no Romania, I selected Austria which is relatively close (Wiki it) then I ended up downloading this file - 8300M_PBr4.5.0_rel92_PL2.7.0.72_A4.5.0.69.exe - that has 73 Mb just as JSanders says in his post.
IMPORTANT: So, now I have the application to upgrade from my 4.2.2.141 version to 4.5.0.92 in my PC.

Then I saw there that I needed Desktop Manager 4.2 SP2 or higher to upgrade my Software.
My Desktop Manager version is 4.2.2.

Ok, I need your help to do this because Ixxx8217;m afraid that I will mess up my BB for good after that little fiasco I had with BB Maps.

So, if my Desktop Manager is good enough for the upgrade, Ixxx8217;ll just have to run the application from above and follow the steps from JSanders post?

Or, if I need a new Desktop Manager Ixxx8217;ll have to download one (FROM WHERE?), install it and then run the application for the software upgrade and follow the steps from JSanders post?

If the new software works that means that everything will work fine on my BB? I mean, aside from the upgrades it will correct all the problems that I have now with the phone?

Now, if something goes horrible wrong as it went with the bloody Maps and I end up with my BB all messed up what then???

Thanks for help . . .

P.S. The links are missing www because I can't post links yet.

P.S.2 I looooove my Curve (funny thing, Curve in romanian language means whores )

There is a link in the initial post of the Latest 8300 OS thread to download Desktop Manager. I would recommend 4.6, withOUT the media manager software.

And, i recommend you don't post novellas next time to explain your problem, you will likely get help quicker.

Good luck.

Ok man, sorry but I'm new at this mobile hacking.

The 4.6 version takes almost 2h to download, can't I just use my 4.2.2 version for the upgrade?

How do I know if my BB is locked for a certain provider? I've got my BB from TIM (Italy) but I'm using it in Vodafone.

  • Select the Options icon.
  • Select Advanced Options.
  • Select SIM Card.
  • Type MEPD

By MEPD, you have to hold the caps key and type those. If the phone is unlocked, all the items will show "Disabled". If it is locked to a provider, can't remember which one, but Network or maybe Service Provider will show enabled. Sounds like yours is not locked to a network.

Since you've downloaded the software, I would see if your version of Desktop Manager installs it. Delete the vendor.xml file and give it a shot.

If I understand correctly, you have two issues that you're trying to resolve:

1) the icon for your mobile browser is gone

2) you want to install BB Maps.

The easiest way to get the browser icon back is to log into your BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) account from your PC, click on the Service Books link and then press the button to Send the Service Books to your BlackBerry.

Once you've resent the service books the Browser icon should come back. Pulling the battery on your BlackBerry to do a hard reset is also a good idea just to make sure everything is clean.

Once you have the Browser back on your BlackBerry you should be able to download BBMaps by visiting mobile.blackberry.com using the BlackBerry's mobile browser.

Ok, now I'm in the SIM Card and it says like this:

SIM Card: Security Enabled
ID: 84239429342342342342 (something like that)
Phone Numbers:
0923102391023
1231203912311 (these are 2 phone numbers of my friends)

That's it.

And when I hold the caps key (arrow up aA) and do the MEPD nothing happens.

DON'T hold the caps key down.

On the sim card screen, simply type M E P D

And yes, you can upgrade using DM 4.2.2, but your initial novella stated:

Therefore I was pointing out where the link was located.

And, the post from markhutchison is correct also, if that is all you want to do. Get a BlackBerry Data Plan from your provider.

ok, and refresh me, why are you upgrading?

If it is just to get the personal email setup icon, you won't, until you get a Data Plan on the account.

If to get BBMaps, you can get that by using your BB browser to mobile.blackberry.com, but you will need a data plan for that.

Do you have a Data Plan on the account?

then you will never get the personal email setup icon, nor will BBMaps work.

If you are on Vodafone Romania, read this:
Translated version of http://www.vodafone.ro/business/telefoane-si-echipamente/blackberry-8310.html

Click "Internet and Data" under the red menu bar, then click on Mobile Email Solutions in the left hand menu.

Mate, do you mean I need to get another service from my provider? With my current service I can surf the web from my other phone (D900) with no problem using GPRS, but I can't enter the yahoo mail page, I don't know why.

On the link you gave it just shows the description of the BB 8310 phone.

Data plan is like a mobile internet service?

Yes, a nice picture. Now follow the links as I described in the post above to examine the BlackBerry Data Plan, called BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

Also read this: What do I need a Data Plan for? - BlackBerryFAQ

This is a BlackBerry, not a D900.

Yeah it seems that here they don't have an automated service to activate my MMS and internet mobile via SMS for BB so I'll have to call someone at Vodafone tomorrow to see what can I do about it.
I find it very strange because 2 days ago I was browsing from my BB and now all of a sudden I can't do that anymore.
I still should upgrade to 4.5, right?

P.S. You know, if life was perfect it would have become boring after a while, so maybe it's better this way.
