Default Blackberry with VMWare...?

Please Login to Remove!

Has anyone had experience with Blackberry functionality with Windows running through VMWare on a Linux machine (RedHat dist)?

A few things - the handset (7100t) gets an error when plugged up stating it cannot charge the device over USB because of an issue; possibly an incorrect USB driver). However, it found the device and installed it (but VMWare's USB shows it as an Anonymous USB Device). When opening Desktop Manager, it just hangs on the verifying applications dialog about half finished with the status bar.

Thats all I've been able to view currently.

I'll try it in our testlab later this week. I haven't been connecting them to the server though, but a workstation setup with BES manager instead.

Workstation 4.5. I've heard that WS 5.0 beta bears the same issues, though.

Linux distributions (host machine) have been Fedora Core 2 and SuSE 9.2.

I have the exact same issues as the original post, it also does not finish with windows guest in a windows vmware host.

As far as the usb message on your screen, you probably have XP SP2, it's a known issue, here's the fix:
Goto device mgr in your XP guest os, drill down on USB Controllers at the bottom.
Right-click Properties the USB Hub, click the Power Management tab.
Un-check anything checked.

If anybody finds the solution for syncing in a vmware guest os please post.

Thanks,
Craig

I have Workstation 5 Beta Build 12206, and I have the same problems. The device will not charge, and i got the same messege on my BB screen as above.

I don't think this is going to work as we expect it to, which SUCKS.

You can still charge your BB, just follow the steps in my previous post.
Also, Intellisync works on mine, just not backup/restore or application loader.

I did. The message does NOT go away on the BB. However, I have noticed now that my BB is charging (very slowly I might add). I have not attempted to SYNC, backup, or add a new application.

Having the same error as you all seem to be having. Anyone find a fix for it? I have an open case with BB and VMware, will get to speak with a VMware tech tomorrow (7/11/05).

My Blackberry will not even perform the initial sync with the guest OS. Errors out almost immediately.

One thought I had was to use the serial cable on the back of the PC and convert to USB. I have seen adapters that are designed to go from USB (on the computer) to serial on anything else (PDA for example). I just purchased two different models, both require power from the USB connector on the computer and would not work. I even ran them trough a hub to attempt to power them, and help with the conversion from USB to Mini USB 5S. Seems like the serial cable method might work but I don't know enough about the communication of methods of USB and Serial for it to be effective. Maybe getting the cable made without the need for power being a direct female DB9 to Mini USB 5s would help.

Blackberry is a 7100t

Yes, it appears that progress is being made, as you read in the other forum. For those wanting the link to the lastest info, here:

http://www.vmware.com/community/thre...=281315#281315

The short story is that is seems the problem may lie within VMWare's USB mapping layer. They are enhancing the entire layer with the upcoming 5.5 release. Current beta-testers are reporting some/better success getting this working with their BlackBerry devices now.

I haven't tried it myself yet (I can't run the beta VMWare stuff right now). Invisik, please let us know about your results. Thanks!

OK, so, I upgraded my blackberry today, went from a really old 5810 to a newer 6220, which I upgraded the software on to the latest version (4.0.2) and attempted to connect it to my Windows XP SP2 running in VMWare Workstation 5.5.1 build-19175 (the latest in Portage) on Gentoo. Upon initial connection, it recognized the device, installed the drivers and then the fun started.......it started to seemingly disconnect/reconnect according to the tray......but according to Windows, it showed up in Device Manager just fine.

That being said, the Desktop Software refused to detect the device. A quick search on Google brought up a few "fixes" from VMWare, none of which worked. This would include the usb.generic.skipsetconfig = "true" and the uhci.syncWriteback = "TRUE" options for the VMX file. So, a seemingly painless upgrade has turned into a bit of a nightmare. I figured it would be nice to get the speed of the USB sync as opposed to the drawn-out fun of waiting for the serial sync. Boy was I wrong!

Now, here is the crazy part, when the BB is connected to my PC, it says its charging, but I watched it and it was DISCHARGING!! Thinking this was just a fluke with the device, I unplugged it from my Linux PC and plugged it into an old P2 400 that's sitting on my floor, and its charging!

Obviously, there's much more to this issue than meets the eye, so if anybody else has heard/experienced something pertaining to this subject or would like some more information on my situation please feel free to contribute/ask.

Does anyone have this working yet? I'm using VMware Workstation 4.5 on a Windows XP x-64 host and XP professional on guest.

I've tried the various USB switches suggested on various forums but still get a "USB Device not recognized" message when I plug in my BB.

Any ideas?

I run RHEL WS and have a strong desire to see BB to work under VMWare for both Linux and Mac OS X support. I don't get too far with default settings under VMWare with host RHEL WS 4 but since I still have a spare Wintel lappy I haven't bothered with it too much yet. -Pk
