Default o2 and Blackberry

Please Login to Remove!

Hello All,
I am new to this forum and blackberrys. I have had a read through some of the Mark Rejhon Faq sections which were very helpful. My friend gave me their blackberry (7230). I was wondering if it is possible to get it running on a standard o2 (uk) contract just with gprs for web access etc ? Sorry if this seems like a silly question.

Thanks And Merry Xmas Alex

Alex,

It's not a silly question at all, as far as I am aware if you don't get the BlackBerry data tariff then unfortunately you won't be able to use the wap browser. I will explain the reason I think this then if I am wrong I'm sure someone on here can correct me.

On most networks (not 100% sure on O2), to receive the browser icons and use them (even just the normal wap browser icon), you first need to receive something called a service book which in basic terms gives the device it's various settings, unfortunately these only come down once the BlackBerry tariff is enabled on your device. You may think then why not borrow a BlackBerry enabled SIM and just bring the browser icon down and then use my SIM, unfortunately this doesn't work either (or at least it hasn't in any of the cases I have seen!).

The only thing that may work is a third party browser such as browser boss (that was the only one I could get to work on my device when I was having problems receiving the Vodafone Browser Service book, although a couple of other third party browsers do exist and could be worth a try!)

Personally I am on Vodafone but through circumstances I actually have been involved in troubleshooting all of the UK network BlackBerry devices (apart from Orange) and as yet have not found a way around this, so if anyone on here has a way that does work I would also love to know!
